  • Jacob Beisel Wiest was born on 8 November 1844, Jordan Township, PA.1
  • He was the son of John Klinger Wiest and Lucetta Beisel.
  • Jacob Beisel Wiest married Mary Ann Oxenreider, daughter of Michael Henry Ochsenrider, on 29 March 1884.1
  • Jacob Beisel Wiest married Ida Schaffer on 27 June 1895.1
  • Jacob kept daily diaries which are the source of much of the information about the life of the Wiests in the Pacific Northwest. Although they are written in a combination of Pennsylvania Dutch and very poor English, Mary Stapleton -- who has transcribed the years 1884-1901 -- reports that they are a delight to read.
According to the Wiest Family History, Jacob and his brother, William, went to California in 1868, and thence to Portland, OR, in 1872, where they engaged in the logging business. At that time, logging was conducted with oxen, with men working 14 hours per day for wages of about $1.50.
In time Jacob Beisel Wiest founded the Wiest Logging Company which, at one time, had extensive operations in the Pacific Northwest.
According to Mary Stapleton, as relayed by Bruce Hall, Jacob Beisel " Jake" Wiest was born in Hebe, Northumberland Co., PA, on November 8, 1844. He left Pennsylvania in 1871, probably by train, to go to California and then north by steamer to Portland, OR. There, he purchased timber and established logging operations in the Stella WA. area, with his brothers Sam, Dan, John, and William. Sam, Dan, William, and Jake eventually bought out John's interest in the business. Later, Sam, who lost a leg in a logging accident, sold his share of the business and moved to Portland. Dan also sold his share, and returned to Pennsylvania.
In 1901, Jake and William sold their operation to Chapman Bros. Logging. However, Jake remained in the lumber business, buying and selling timber rights, for the rest of his life -- even after moving to Skamokawa, Wahkiakum County, WA, and taking up the life of a farmer.
Jacob Beisel Wiest died November 21, 1919, in Skamokawa, WA, of acute dilation of the heart complicated by diabetes mellitus.1

  • An obituary in the Portland "Oregonian" stated:
Samuel B. Wiest, founder of the town of Stella, Washington and one of the first loggers of the Pacific northwest, died at his home, 1090 Hawthorne Avenue, Thursday night. He was 76 years old.
Mr. Wiest came to the Pacific coast at the close of the Civil War, sailing from San Francisco for Portland on the first trip of the City of Chester and reaching Astoria after six days of rough weather. With his two brothers, J[acob] B. and William Wiest, he started the first logging operations of any consequence in the northwest. He was active in that industry for 20 years, retiring after an accident in which he lost one of his legs, and since that time has made his home in Portland.
Mr. Wiest had a gallant Civil War record having suffered severe wounds at the Battle of the Wilderness and at Spotsylvania Courthouse. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 17 and fought in many important battles. He was an active member of the Sumner Post, G.A.R.
Funeral services will be held under the auspices of the Grand Army tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at Finley's establishment, with interment in Rose City Cemetery. Mr. Wiest is survived by his widow, two brothers, J.B. and William Wiest, and a daughter (Mary), Mrs. Charles Piper, all of Portland.1
