    THE SAM WIEST STORY
Samuel Wiest was born, according to his tombstone in Hebe, Pa., 1885. He was born to Hannah and John Wiest . John was born, according to his tombstone and shown to me by Mary Klinger, 1863 and died 1935, and Hannah was born 1862 and died 1940. Sam was probably born into a large family somewhere near Hebe or Klingerstown, Pa. I have only heard of one brother. This brother migrated to Enchant, Alberta, Canada and had fifteen children.
When Sam was 16 years old, he decided he did not want to work in the coal mines. He said that you get the black lung disease and die. So he packed a little brown suitcase, grip as he called it, hopped a freight and came to Iowa. He then went to work as a "hired man" for my Grandparents, John and Hannah Shade Fettkether. How he knew them, I do not know, but I do know that a Richard Wiest worked for Hannah's parents. This is on the 1900 Census for John and Hannah Shade. Also I understood that Sam was related but I don't know the connection.
Sometime in the 1920's Sam returned to Pennsylvania and married a big red-haired girl named Lottie M. Erdman. Sam was a small man, maybe 5'6", small frame, blue eyes and large ears. Lottie was much larger. Sam and Lottie returned to Iowa and rented a farm one half mile east of John and Hannah's farm. At least three of Sam's children were born in Iowa. In all, they had nine children.
Sam and family returned to Pennsylvania sometime in the 1930's. I assume it was about the time his father died. Sam moved on to the family farm that was then owned by two of his brothers. Now Sam could not read or write so he paid his farm payments with livestock and grain. One day his brothers came and told Sam he would have to get off the farm because he was not making his payments. Sam said he did and they didn't write it down. So Sam stayed. Emma, the youngest daughter, said she remembers it well. One day the Sheriff came and took Sam, and his oldest son, John right out of the field to jail. So, Sam moved to another farm.
Unhappy, Sam started going to the tavern. When he would get a few beers in him, he would get out his harmonica and play and jig. When the tavern closed for the night they would take Sam out and put him in his buggy, slap the horse, and home he would go. Friends said, it wa s a good thing the horse knew the way home. Lottie would find him asleep in the buggy in the morning.
In 1938, Lottie got sick. In 1939 , Lottie died. Emma said, "When we left for the funeral, Sam was setting on the porch, and when we came home, Sam was gone." Some of the oldest children were married so they took the youngest home to raise. Latter one of Sam's brothers felt bad about what he did to Sam. He took the youngest daughter, Emma, home and raised and educated her.
Sam went back to Iowa, and back to work for John Fettkether, who was now a widower too.
John sold the farm to his son, Oren, in 1942. John and Sam lived with them. John and Sam always went to the "Beer Joint" on Wednesday and Saturday nights to play cards and have a few beers. Sam always took out his harmonica, played and jigged. The tunes sounded very Irish. Sam had two sets of clothes. Two big black hats, two blue chambray shirts, two pairs of bib overalls, two pairs of black shoes, two pairs of long johns and two pairs of socks. One set was saved for going to the tavern and the other for work. Sam always washed his own clothes in the creek, and mended his socks with twine. He never looked dirty no matter how hard he worked. Sam [ ] took his baths, spring and fall, in the creek. He wore long Johns year [round and ga]rters on his sleeves and pants legs. He said a mouse ran up his leg once and that was enough for him. Sam didn't drink milk. He said milk was for calves and babies. When he ate cold cereal such as Wheaties he used water!
On a warm, October 17, 1944, evening, Sam and John went to the tavern. The tavern was in Dunkerton, one mile from [their home.] Early in the evening, John told Sam he was going home. He didn't feel well. Sam said he would walk home later. John left. John's car was hit by a freight train on the edge of town. John was killed. The train, carrying oil,was derailed. The news traveled fast. Sam ran the to the scene, knelt down beside John and cried. He said, "Oh Johnny, its all my fault, if I would have been with you, this wouldn't have happened." The wake was held at the farm home. John was "laid out" in the parlor. After the funeral, Sam, and his little suitcase, was gone.
Sam came back the next Spring and asked Oren if he could work for him. Oren was delighted. Oren always said Sam was the best chore man around. Oren paid him $100.00 a month in cash. Sam would hide his money in his shoe. Sam was a good gardener. He knew how to hill up a potato to get the most potato's per plant. He was also a good grounds keeper. He kept the farm neat and tidy. Sam never learned how to drive a tractor or a car. When he rode in a car, he had to have his window rolled all the way down with his arm out, no mater what the weather was like! He loved dandelions. Every spring, he would dig a five gallon pail for Oren'swife, Lucille, to clean and fall, when the harvesting was over, Sam and his little suitcase would just disappear. The next spring, about April, Sam would just show up for breakfast one morning. It was always a treat to hear his travel stories. He usually would go to his brother's farm in Alberta, Canada, and then on to Pennsylvania for a short visit. He always just "hopped a freight."
Sam continued this routine for many years. One year, he told us of being "rolled" in Sunbury , PA. He was in the tavern and some one noticed his money. As he left the tavern two men mugged him, stole his money and beat severely. The tavern owners found him and called his family to come and get him.
As Sam got older, Oren tried to get him to apply for Social Security. Sam said he would not sign anything.
After Oren's youngest son married and joined Oren in farming, Sam moved out. He went to Dunkerton and lived with a lady that owned the tavern. When he became ill, the lady, Mrs. Cheney, called his family in Pennsylvania and they came and took him home. He died in Pennsylvania.
To me, Sam was my built in baby sitter, teacher, Grandfather and game playing friend. He was a character I will never forget. After I married I had three children. My two sons were born with Glaucoma. Sam, who always called me "Babe" was very interested in the boys. He was always asking me what they could see and what would they do when they grew up.
