  • According to the Wiest Family History, Johannes was the ancestor of the Klingerstown branch of the family, his family having migrated fgrom Berks County to the Mahantango region when Johannes was only 9 years old. After hiis father died, Johannes, age 17, effectively became the head of the household, helping hiis mother raise his nrothers and sisters.
    He continued and expanded his family's mercantile business and eventually came to possess most of the property, apart from some farms owned by the Baum family, that once comprised the Spread Eagle Manor aroound Klingerstown.1

    John A. Wiest, retired Valley View farmer, died at the age of 85 Friday night at his home following a lingering illness.
    A native of Upper Mahantongo township, Mr. Wiest was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wiest. After operating a farm in Hubley township for many years, he sold the property to his son, Allen Wiest, 15 years ago and built the home in Valley View in which he lived until his death. His hobby was raising turkeys and other fowls.
    Surviving are eight children, Milton Wiest, Staten Island, N. Y; Rufus Wiest, Gratz; Mrs. Emery Artz, Spring Glen; Mrs. Froni Stutzman and Mrs. Lloyd Bowman, Valley View; Charles Wiest, Harrisburg; Allen Wiest, Hubley Township; and Mrs. Guy Giest, Hegins; as well as 31 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Three half brothers, Milton Wiest, Baltimore, Md; Algon and Uphras Wiest, both of Philadelphia; and two half sisters, Mrs. Clarence Felton and Mrs. Jerry Snyder, Hegins Valley, also survive. His wife, Amelia, died eight years ago.
    Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Robert J. Harrity, Lykens, at the late residence at 10 a. m. Wednesday and will be continued in Klinger's Union Church Erdman. Interment will be made in Klinger's Union cemetery.
