  • Some sources record that Andreas Schmeltz was born on 9 January 1750/51, Wiera, Hesse-Darmstad, Germany.3,4
  • Andreas, along with his brothers Johann Adam and Johannes, arrived at the port of New York with the Regiment von Knyphausen, which had been recruited in Germany to fight on behalf of the British in the American Revolution. Andreas was a private in the Knyphausen Co. 1. He probably deserted while on work release in Pennsylvania. Some sources indicate that "Andreas Schmeltz was captured at the famous Battle of Trenton on the 26th. of December, 1776, barely four months after arrival in America, and was held captive in Lancaster, Pennsylvania." It is not clear whether Andreas was held captive only in Lancaster County or whether he was relocated, in September 1777, to Winchester, Virginia along with a number of other Hessian prisoners.5,6
  • He married Anna Maria Waller, daughter of Rupert Waller and Anna Maria Wehmayer, on 31 July 1791, First Reformed Church, Lancaster County, PA.2
  • Andreas purchased 102 acres of land in what is now Hubley Township, Schuylkill County, from John and Barbara Koch for 350 pounds. The land was adjacent to lands owned by George Klinger, Martin Koppenhaver, John Zundt, and to the Pine Creek.7
