  • Mary Klinger concludes, from the location of the births of George and Elizabeth's first two children, that the Klingers migrated to the Klingerstown area sometime between 1780 and 1785. (Mary Klinger, Klingers from the Odenwald, Hesse, Germany ca. 1610-1989, p. 196.) Their first son, Alexander Klinger, has a tombstone in Cochranton, PA, and a baptismal record in Reading. The second recorded son, George, Jr., was born 6 Sep 1787, in Pine Grove Township, which could be the area near Klingers Church as Schuylkill County was not formed until 1811. It is the first record of Klinger's Church, although ( Klinger's Church) was not founded until 1800. From these facts she writes: "This leaves one to think the migration to our area was made sometime between 1780 and 1785? (Post Revolutionary War time). To substantiate the time, place, and family of George Esquire can be seen in the orphan's court proceedings at Pottsville, PA." (Id.)

"George Esq. Klinger married (2) 21 June 1801, recorded at Zion's Church in Harrisburg, Charlotte Deibler Snyder, widow daughter of Mathias Deibler. Information taken from Mathias Deibler Sr'.s will in Harrisburg. Charlotte was born in 1773, the same year as Peter Klinger, brother of George.

"Mahantango Township - The first assessment of the taxes in Mahantango township was made in 1802. Total amount levied $159.48, assessed as resident tax-payer: George Adam Klinger.

"Upper Mahantango Township - About the year 1807, Mahantango township was divided into two parts, and they were called Upper and Lower Mahantango. The records showing the exact time and manner of division are missing. The earliest assessment found was for 1808. Total amount assessed $25.19. Abraham Yoder was then the assessor and collector. George A. Klinger was on the list for 1802, lived in the upper section of the township before its division, excepting some changes which may have been made in the meantime.

"In 1811, the last assessments were levied as part of Berks County. On March 1, 1811, Schuylkill County was formed and its first County Seat was at Orwigsburg, by the act of Assembly.

"Mahantango Township - The first assessment of the taxes in Mahantango township was also in 1802. Total amount levied $159.48. Frederick Kreutzer was the collector. George Klinger, George Adam Klinger and Jeremiah Klinger were assessed as resident tax-payers.
