Child loses life in Ashland fire
    By PAT PURCELL Staff Writer
ASHLAND -- A 2-year-old Ashland girl lost her life in an early morning blaze today on West Center Street which evacuated four families from their homes.
Amy Maurer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Maurer, 3 W. Center St., was found on the second floor of her home by Fireman Kenneth Sausser, who, along with two other firemen, donned air packs and began searching through the dense smoke for the child.
The fire is under investigation by local fire officials and State Police Fire Marshal Lawrence Postupack, who was on the scene shortly after being alerted to the blaze.
    Space heater believed cause
Ashland Fire Chief Thomas Towers said the fire is believed to have been started by an electric space heater in the vicinity of a chair in the living room of the Maurer home.
The general alarm was sounded at 12:40 a.m.. and when members of Ashland's two fire companies arrived at the scene moments later, the first floor of the home was engulfed in flames.
When told the child was still in the house, firemen risked their own lives as they began searching for her in the bedroom on the second floor of the home. Firemen were hampered in their efforts by the heavy smoke but continued their search until she was found.
After her body was found, Amy was taken to the Ashland State General Hospital in the community ambulance where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 2:05 a.m. by Dr. Aaron Nordenberg.
Amy's death brings Ashland's fire fatality count this year to three. On Jan. 24, Mrs. Mary Yoder, 23, and her 4-year-old daughter, Melissa, lost their lives when fire destroyed their home at 1903 Center St. along with six other adjoining properties.
Damaged in this morning's fire was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mueller and family, 1 W. Center St; Mr. and Mrs. William Ennis Jr., and family, 5 W. Center St; and Mrs. William Ennis Sr. 7 W. Center St.
Neighbors in the fire area credited the prompt response of the Ashland fire companies and their efforts in preventing the fire from spreading further. The fire was under control in 45 minutes after firemen arrived at the scene. The Gordon fire company was called to the scene for stand-by protection.
