  • The 1880 Census lists William "Rhodarmel" and his wife Sarah living in Jordan Township, Northumberland County, PA, where he was a farmer. Their household included 3 children: Emma, "Manassas," and "Polley."3
  • According to Bruce Hall, William lived on his parents' farm until, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War as a member of Company P, 50th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. When his initial 3-year term of enlistment expired, he reenlisted for another three years at Blain's Cross Road in eastern Tennessee. He attained the rank of sergeant and Right General Guide. In addition to traveling all over the South, he also saw service in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, seeing action in 32 engagements as a member of Sherman's army, including: Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam, South Mountain, Vicksburg, and Jackson. He also participated in the siege of Knoxville and operations at Petersburg. Shortly after he returned to Northumberland County, PA, at the close of the war, he began farming in Hubley , Township, Schuylkill Co., PA, where he was a tenant for nine years. In 1877, he acquired a tract of 22 acres in Jordan Township, Northumberland County, PA, which he cultivated until the time of his retirement. In addition to farming, he was a carpenter.1

    L. Rothermel, Father of 13 Children, Dies
    Lazarus Rothermel, 78, well known in lower Northumberland county where he spent most of his life, died Sunday morning at his late home in Klingerstown, near the Northumberland-Schuylkill county line.
    He had been ill since the Monday before Thanksgiving Day, at which time he was stricken with a paralytic stroke.
    He was the father of thirteen children, eleven of whom are living. They are: Mrs; Grace Runkle, of Greenbrier: Mrs. Jacob Wiest, of Washington; Mrs. Jay Phillips, of Klingerstown; John Rothermel, of Herndon; Mrs. James Shadle, of Sacramento; Samuel Rothermel, of Klingerstown; Mrs. Ira Klinger, of Valley View; Norman Rothermel, of Klingerstown; Mrs. John Willard, of Valley View, Mrs. Geo. D. Bixler, of near Valley View, and Mrs. Kyson Coleman, of Klingerstown. One brother, Abraham Rothermel, of Pillow, also survives.
    Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. Elias Noll. Interment will be made in the Hebe cemetery.
