  • Abraham S. Schwenk died on 10 March 1885, Lewisburg, Union County, PA, at age 69.6
  • Newspaper obituary:
Abraham Schwenk died suddenly, of heart affliction, at his resilience, at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 10, 1885. He had been sick for about ten days with pleuro-pneumonia, but had been successfully treated by Doctor Willikam Leiser, and was rapidly gaining strength. While attempting to rise and dress, he full over across the bed, and soon afterwards expired, without apparent pain, as if peacefully going to sleep.
His son, Doctor Schwenk, had left him at four o'clock in the morning, to return to Philadelphia, and then he was in cheerful spirits, and all of the family were happy in the belief that he would soon be fully restored to his accustomed good health.
He was a son of John Schwenk, and was born near Schwenksville, Montgomery county, Penn'a., January 10, 1816, and was accordingly aged 69 years and two months.
He was a direct descendant of the Von Sehwenks of Germany, one of whom settled nearly two hundred years ago where now is Schwenksville. He moved to Schuylkill county, this State, in April, 1840, where he, on Dec. 12, of that year, married Catharine Klinger, a daughter of Peter Klinger. He was a member of the old firm of Mattis & Schwenk, in Lykens Valley, and subsequently was engaged in the manufacture of blasting powder, and as a general merchant in Schuylkill county, whence he came to Lewisburg in April, 1871, to remain while his only daughter and youngest two sons completed their education. Becoming attached to Lewisburg, he and his family decided to make their home here; and a year later, bought and occupied the handsome residence at the southwest corner of Market and Seventh streets, where he died a widely known and highly respected citizen.
His wife, six sons and one daughter survive him. The children are: Gen. Samuel K Schwenk, of the U.S. Army; Aaron K. Schwenk and Abraham B. Schwenk, of the firm of Brenniser, Schwenk & Co. Philadelphia; Lieutenant Milton K. Schwenk, U. S. Navy, now on duty of tne school ship "St. Mary's," New York Harbor; Miss Alvira K. Schwenk; John E. K. Schwenk, a farmer of Orange county, New York, and Doctor Peter N.K. Schwenk, a successful young occullst of Philadelphia.
The funeral services were held at the late residence of the deceased at 11 A M., Friday, March 13, conducted by the Rev. R. L. Gerhart, of the Reformed church, assisted by the Rev E. H. Leisenring, of the Lutheran church, and were largely attended, many friends and relatives coming from a distance.
The six sons acted as pall-bearers, and the remains were taken to the Lewisburg Cemetery.
Lewisburg Chronicle (Lewisburg, Pennsylvania), 19 Mar 1885, Thu, Page 1.6
  • He was buried at Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union County, PA.7
  • An article in Journal of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association offered the following biography of Abraham:
“Abraham cleared several acres of land at the west end of what is now Hegins Township, south of Pine Creek, along the Rausch Gap Road to Sacramento. On this parcel, he built a home for his family which also served as a tavern for overnight travelers. This tavern, known as Schwenk's Hall, had a stable built a short distance behind it. The Schwenk family grew their own vegetables and fruits and raised some hogs and cattle. A wooden water line was laid from a bubbling spring several hundred feet south of the house. This area, where the tavern stood extending from Rausch Gap Road about a quarter mile northeast to Rausch Creek, is still known as Schwenk's Hall.
“Abraham must have owned quite a bit of land, including lots on Center Street in Germanville, which is now Main Street in Valley View. He was also involved in community affairs such as being one of seven advocates of free public schools in 1841.
“It is highly possible that Abraham was involved in building the Rausch Gap School House which was built in 1863 and used until 1917. This school house is located one-fourth mile northeast of Schwenk's Tavern and was made into a home by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wolf after they purchased it.
“Abraham's and Catherine's sons, Abraham, John and Peter, settled in Philadelphia. Their son Samuel settled in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The boys all shared the middle initial K., which stood for Klinger, their mother's maiden name.
“Peter, a well known doctor at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia for many years, was married to Mary R. Shepp. They had a son, Peter N. K. Schwenk, Jr. who married Marie Haurdel. Peter, Jr. and Marie had three children-Jeannette, Peter III and Daniel.
“Peter III currently resides in Ocean City, New Jersey where he owns and operates "The Nassau" apartments motel. He also still owns four parcels of land in Schwenk's Hall totaling thirty-two and seven tenth acres.
“John, Peter's twin brother, became an attorney in Philadelphia. He later moved to Merchantsville, New Jersey. He and his wife had three daughters, Mrs. Don Taylor of Merchantsville; Mrs. Charles Irvin of New York City; and Mrs. James Calleen of Philadelphia. He spent his later years with one of his daughters in Florida.
    . . . .
“The whereabouts of the other children of Abraham and Catherine Klinger Schwenk are unknown. “.8

Samuel K. Schwenk1

  • Last Edited: 13 Jan 2020
  • Samuel K. Schwenk was born on 8 May 1842.2
  • He was the son of Abraham S. Schwenk and Eva Catharina Klinger.
  • "At the age of nineteen, Samuel K. Schwenk enrolled at Tremont, Schuylkill County, August 19, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. A, 50th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Vol. Infantry and at Harrisburg on September 9, 1861. He was discharged from this Regiment on July 30, 1865 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also served as a Captain of Co. I, 9th U.S. Vet. Vol. from October 25, 1865 to April 25, 1866, and in the United States Army from July 17, 1867 to March 20, 1901.
"Samuel K. Schwenk married Emma Mai Marconnier on December 24, 1879 in the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia. They had a large military wedding with 1,500 invitations. Rev. John F. Meridith of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, Chaplin of the 50th Pennsylvania Regiment (General Schwenks' Civil War regiment) performed the ceremony.
"While living in New York City, Samuel K. applied for invalid pension on May 20, 1911, and again on May 17, 1912. A note written by Samuel on the margin of his application for pension states, "I was discharged as a Captain of Co. A, 50th Pennsylvania Vol. Infantry on October 12, 1864, on account of physical disability arising from wounds received in action at the Battle of Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864, and appointed Major, same regiment on February 28, 1864."
"Following Samuel K. Schwenk's death on April 17, 1915, his widow, Emma Mai, applied for widow's pension. The pension was almost denied as Emma Mai had no marriage certificate since none was asked for or received on their wedding day. Fortunately, Samuel K. had the foresight to acquire three affidavits with the signatures of witnesses of their marriage. The affidavits, signed by Emma Mai and Samuel's brothers, Peter and John Schwenk served as proof of their marriage. Emma Mai's widow pension was approved."3

    GEN. SCHWENK DEAD.
NEW . YORK, April 13 -- Brigadier General Samuel K. Schwenk died at his home, 600 West 186th St. When 17 years old he enlisted as a lieutenant with the 50th Regiment of Volunteers of Pennsylvania. He was promoted to captain, and later for his service at Noteaway River he was made maiior; for bravery at Cold Spring, lieutenant colonel, and for his assault, on Fort Stedman, colonel and brigadier general. General Schwenk was in the real estate business in this city for 30 years. He was president of the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Veterans.
Many local veterans served under arms with him as members of the 50th Pennsylvania Regiment.

    A later article reported:
    PROMINENT VET. PASSES AWAY
Friends of the late General Samuel K. Schwenk were grieved to learn of his death which occurred at his home in New York City recently. At a reunion of the Fiftieth Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Association held here Saturday, September 12th, 1914, Mr. Schwenk made many friends. He will be remembered as being a man of tall stature. He occupied the first automobile at the head of the parade. Mr. Schwenk was Lieutenant Colonel of the 50th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a brave soldier and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. At the battle of Antietam, he was seriously wounded and lay for many hours on the field of battle apparently dead. During the hottest part of the battle, Captain Charles E. Brown, of Schuylkill Haven and Captain James Levan of Minersville worked their way on their hands and knees to where he lay and dragged him to a place of safety and thus saved his life.
After the war and upon the organization of the 50th Regiment Veteran Volunteer Association, he was made its president or colonel and remained as such until his death. He served last in his official capacity at the re-union held in Schuylkill Haven in 1914. He was over-joyed at the grand reception accorded the Association by the comrades and citizens of Schuylkill Haven and could not praise those in charge of the reception highly enough. General Schwenk is survived by his wife and several children.

  • James L. Coleman was born on 21 December 1950, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, PA.1
  • He was the son of Robert Raymond Coleman and Annie Cordella Schlegel.2
  • James L. Coleman died on 21 September 2013, Stamford, Delaware County, NY, at age 62.3
  • Online obituary:
James "Jim" Coleman, age 62, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at his home in Stamford, New York. A beloved father of three, he was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a son of Annie C. Schlegel Coleman of Gratz, Pennsylvania and the late Robert R. Coleman. He is survived by one son, Charles E. Coleman of Rocklin, California; two daughters, Christine C. Miles of Los Angeles, California, and Sarah M. Coleman of Stamford, New York; two grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas W. Coleman of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Jim's family lived in the Gratz, Pennsylvania area until 1966, when they relocated to Stamford, New York.
Jim was a 1968 graduate of Stamford Central High School and attended Mohawk Valley Community College.
As teen in the 1960s, he reveled in the spirit of free expression and protest. In later years he disdained Microsoft and promoted Linux as a bastion of freedom with his computer business, the Long Count Cab Company.
A lifelong gun enthusiast, Jim enjoyed daily target practice in the basement with a BB gun, shot skeet weekly, and was an avid member of the Stamford Rod and Gun Club and the Oneonta Sportsmen's Club. He was also an avid motorcyclist, and for many years his full dress Harley- Davidson motorcycle was his most prized possession.
Music was always a big part of Jim's life. He loved both rock and classical music, rarely missing a Friends of Music concert at Stamford's "old Rexmere Hotel" (now the Frank W. Cyr Center). He played the saxophone during his school days, and later the guitar and keyboard. The band he played with in his high school days is remembered fondly by many.
Jim also enjoyed reading widely varied philosophical perspectives. He was a frequent writer of letters and loved passing around inspirational cartoon jokes. He devoured current events online but avoided TV news with its political slants, connecting many behind the scenes dots that mainstream press analysis often missed.
He worked for the New York Power Authority for many years, working his way up from warehouse clerk to Senior Operator through self-directed studies and his usual calculated tenacity. The rotating shifts he worked for years influenced his life even in retirement, leading to his "night owl" tendencies and his infamous creed that "Nothing important happens before noon."
