     Kenneth Edward Klinger was born on 20 November 1931, near Herndon, Jackson Township, Northumberland County, PA. He was the son of Guy Edwin Klinger and Helen Lorene Lemon. Kenneth Edward Klinger was baptized on 1 April 1932, at his parents' home, by Rev. G.E. Klick, Herndon RD, Jackson Township, Northumberland County, PA.¹ Kenneth graduated from electrician's school at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. A May 1951 newspaper article reported:

Kenneth E. Klinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Klinger, Herndon was graduated September 22 from the electricians' school at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill., and has been given an assignment. Klinger graduated with honors in his class.
A graduate of the Lower Mahanoy Joint High School at Dalmatia with the class of 1949, he enlisted in the Navy in February, 1950. He received his boot training at Great Lakes, Ill., and then continued his special training there.

Kenneth E. Klinger, fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Klinger of Herndon, is serving aboard the escort patrol vessel USS 882 in the Far East.
During the winter months this small ship participated in the Hungnam evacuation and in the relandings at Inchon. Recent weeks have been spent in overhaul at Yokosuka, Japan.
Klinger, who entered the Naval service Feb. 8, 1950, received his recruit training at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
Before entering the Navy, he was graduated from Mahanoy Joint High School, Dalmatia.

The 882 is on her second tour of duty in Korean waters. This type of craft is used for escort missions and amphibious landings. Her specialized job during a landing consists of directing and controling waves of landing craft.

Kenneth Klinger of Herndon recently received his discharge from the Navy with the rating of Interior Communications Electrician, First Class. He served four years, two years of which were spent in the Far East. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Klinger, of Herndon.

Apparently, after Kenneth was discharged in California, his brother Merle flew to San Francisco from where they drove to SOuthern California to visit their cousins, Marie Smith and Bob Lemon. From there they drove east via a southern route through Arizpona, New Mexico, and Texas, to New Orleans, and then north through Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington, DC. (1954 Herndon newspaper clipping).⁶ Kenneth was a manager of residential apartment buildings in New York City until his retirement to Hackettstown, NJ. He died on 23 September 2021, Hackettstown, Warren County, NJ, at age 89.⁷

Kenneth E. Klinger, 89, of Hackettstown, NJ passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021 at home with his loving family by his side.
Kenneth was born on November 20, 1931 in Herndon, PA to the late Guy and Helen Klinger.
He grew up hunting in Pennsylvania woods for deer and rabbits with his Father and his Uncle Roy and his rabbit dog Admiral Kenny. He spoke fondly of those memories his entire life.
He worked as an electrician in Herndon, PA while still a teenager and later in his own business. After graduating high school Kenneth proudly served his country abroad in the United States Navy during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Interior Communications Technician Petty Officer 1st class. After returning home he married the love of his life, Emma Jane Klock. Kenneth was employed as a NY hospital electrician and an elevator mechanic. He became Superintendent and later Manager of a 1235 apartment housing complex in New York City with over 150 employees. He was awarded several [commendations] including a certificate for one of the Best and most successfully Managed Co-Op's in NY City.
He retired in 1997 enjoying more time with his family and beloved grandchildren. He was very proud of his heritage and was an avid family historian. He loved to do crossword puzzles, word jumbles and was a vocabulary aficionado.
He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything and all things electric. He enjoyed working on cars and building things, hunting and fishing. He loved to go RVing and the Delaware shore was one of his favorite destinations and never missed an opportunity to go clamming.
He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. Kenneth is a past member of Faith Lutheran Church in Herndon, PA where he served on the choir. He was a life member of the Mandata American Legion Post 504, a past member of the Sunbury VFW Post 1532. He would say that his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He will be sadly missed.
Kenneth is survived by his devoted wife; Emma Klinger, his loving children; daughter, Deborah Dean his son, Keith Klinger and his wife Susan, and his cherished grandchildren, Robert Dean and Kristina Klinger.
He was predeceased by his brother Carlos and his twin brother Merle. He also lost his sister Mary at a young age.

     Amelia Jane Schwalm is also referred to as Meley in some sources. She was born on 4 October 1857. She was the daughter of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Her married name was Paul.¹ Amelia Jane Schwalm married Daniel S. Paul, son of Daniel Paul and Elizabeth Schlegel, on 21 September 1879, Greenbrier, Northumberland County, PA.^2,3 Amelia Jane Schwalm died on 20 July 1929, Gratz, Dauphin County, PA, at age 71.^1,4 She was buried on 24 July 1929, at Saint Peter's Reformed Cemetery, Orwin, Schuylkill County, PA.^2,4,3

MRS. DANIEL PAUL Mrs. Amelia Paul, age 71 years, 9 months and 16 days died at her home in Gratz Saturday July 20. She had been in ill health the past two years, after having suffered a paralytic stroke. She had been a resident of Gratz for five years.
Mrs. Paul was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schwalm and was born October 4, 1857. She was married to Daniel S. Paul, September 21 1879 at Greenbrier. He passed away a number of years ago.
Mrs. Paul is survived by three sons and three daughters: Preston and Herbert Paul of Orwin, Pa., Mrs. Frank Adams, Tower City ; Mrs. Fred Klinger, Tremont; Mrs. George Fetterhoff, Tower City and Fred Paul of Gratz; also by three sisters and one brother: Albert Schwalm, Mrs. Nathaniel Wiest, Mrs. Preston Clark, Klingerstown and Mrs. Milton Klinger, Shamokin, and by thirty-five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchilden. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Funeral services were held from the home of her son, Fred Paul, in Gratz at 9.30 Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. W. Z. Artz, pastor of the Lykens Valley Lutheran Parish and interment was made in the cemetery at Orwin.

As of circa 1881,her married name was Scheib.^1,2 Elizabeth Anna Schwalm married Victor Emanuel Scheib, son of Joshua Scheib and Elizabeth Raudenbach, circa 1881.^1,2 Elizabeth Anna Schwalm died on 5 April 1898, at age 38. She was buried at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.

     Margaret Cassy Schwalm was born on 16 June 1862. She was the daughter of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Margaret Cassy Schwalm died on 9 August 1865, at age 3.¹ She was buried at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.¹

     David Wilson Schwalm is also referred to as David William Schwalm in some sources.¹ He was born on 6 October 1864. He was the son of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. David Wilson Schwalm died on 30 July 1865. He was buried at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.¹

     Johannes Schwalm The Hessian, p. 174, says that Franses died in childhood. Some sources ("Descendants of Jacob Rubendall") list name as "Franz Ellsworth Schwalm." Franz Ellsworth Schwalm was born on 1 June 1866; Listing gives birth date as June 11 but from the age at death the date would have to be June 1.¹ He was the son of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Franz Ellsworth Schwalm died on 25 June 1868, at age 2.² He was buried at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.¹

     Her married name was Erdman.¹ Sevilla Elizabeth Schwalm was born on 29 June 1868.² She was the daughter of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Some sources record that Sevilla Elizabeth Schwalm was born on 29 June 1869, but her death certifcate gives the year of birth as 1868.³ She married Daniel Erdman, son of Jacob W. Erdman and Catharine Seitz.¹ Sevilla Elizabeth Schwalm died on 8 April 1917, Jackson Township, Northumberland County, PA, at age 48.² She was buried on 12 April 1917, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Red Cross, Northumberland County, PA.^2,3

     Albert Peter Schwalm is also referred to as Alfred Preston in some sources.
     Also known as Alfred and Albert Preston Schwalm. His descendants are listed on pp. 175-176 of "Johannes Schwalm The Hessian." He was born on 22 July 1871. He was the son of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Albert Peter Schwalm married Mary Paul, daughter of Emanuel Paul and Elmyra Elizabeth Erdman.¹ Albert Peter Schwalm and an unknown person obtained a marriage license in March 1895 Schuylkill County, PA.² He married Barbara A. Clark, daughter of Sophie Romberger, circa April 1895.^3,2 Albert Peter Schwalm died on 11 December 1929, Valley View, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 58.^4,5

Albert Schwalm, aded 54, of Klingerstown, died suddenly at the office of Dr. I. E. Sausser of Valley View. He had been out hunting with a party of men, and was stricken with a heart attack. He was taken to the doctor's office, but died before he could be given medical aid.

Albert P. Schwalm
The funeral of Albert P. Schwalm, of Klingerstown, was held from his late home on Monday, December 16. Mr. Schwalm died suddenly from heart failure on December 12 while returning from a hunting trip. After brief services at the house, further appropriate services were held in Klinger's church of which he was a life-long member. He is survived by his widow, 10 children and 3 sisters. Rev. Herman J. Naftzinger of Hegins, officiated.

     Her married name was Clark.¹ Ida Louisa Schwalm was born on 20 April 1879, Klingerstown, Dauphin County, PA.² She was the daughter of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall. Ida Louisa Schwalm married Henry Preston Clark, son of Sophie Romberger, on 25 August 1900, Northumberland County, PA.^1,3 Ida Louisa Schwalm died on 12 June 1964, Hegins Township, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 85.⁴

Mrs. Ida Clark 85, of Hegins R. D. 1, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Stiely, Hegins R. D. 1, at noon Friday. She had been in failing health for the past year and was bedfast for three days.
A native of Klingerstown R. D., Mrs. Clark was the daughter of the late Frederick and Sarah Rubendahl Schwalm. She was born April 20, 1879.
She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Klingerstown R. D.
Her husband, Henry Preston Clark, preceded her in death in January, 1952.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Frank Masser, Klingerstown R. D; Mrs. Della Clark, Danville; Mrs. Elwood Maurer, Klingerstown R. D; and Mrs. Stiely; two sons, Edgar Clark, Dornstfe, and Fred, Valley View; 23 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p. m. from Salem Church. Klingerstown R. D., in charge of Mr. Doyle Luckenbaugh, Leck Kill. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Friends and relatives will be received at the Lawrence Rothermel funeral home, Klingerstown R. D. 1, Monday evening, and at the church Tuesday from 1 to 2 p. m.

Carrie Ellen Klinger was baptized on 18 April 1897, Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA; Baptismal record at Klinger's Church indicates:
"Carrie Etna, da. of Milton C. Klinger and w. Ella S. (nee Schwalm).
b. Feb. 8, 1897, bapt. Apr. 18, 1897, sp. the parents."

Klinger, Zion (Klinger's) Church History, Part II, p. 180 (1987).¹ Some sources record that Carrie Ellen Klinger was born on 8 February 1896.³ As of 12 June 1916,her married name was Zimmerman.⁵ She married William Grant Zimmerman, son of William D. Zimmerman and Emma S. Carstetter, on 12 June 1916.^5,2 In 1920, Carrie and Grant were living on Walnut Street in the Edgewood district of Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA, with their 2 sons, William and Robert. At the time, Grant was working in a coal mine.⁶ Carrie Ellen Klinger died of pulmonary tuberculosis on 16 August 1924, at her residence 1422 Walnut Street, Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA, at age 27.^7,8,9

Mrs. Grant Zimmerman Passed Away Saturday Morning -- Failed to Recover From Operation
Mrs. Grant Zimmerman, aged 27 years, a well, known and highly, respected young matron of the community, died at her home, 1422 West Walnut street, Saturday morning at 9:15 of a complication of diseases.
Two years ago Mrs. Zimmerman underwent a serious operation at the Geisinger hospital and failing to regain her health had been in an invalided condition ever since, the past four months having been confined to her bed.
Deceased was born in Lykens valley, having been a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Klinger. She was married eight years ago and since that time had been a resident of this city. Sha was a member of Grace Lutheran church and was a regular attendant at the services when her health permitted. Of a kindly disposition, she was held in the highest esteem by a large circle of friends, whose sympathies go out to the bereaved family.
Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Sarah Klinger, three brothers, Roy, Guy and Ira, one sister, Sarah, and three small children, Billy, Robert and Sarah.
The funeral services will be conducted at the home Wednesday morning at 10:30 and will be in charge of Rev. E. H. Gerhart. Interment will be made in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.

     Merle Guy Klinger also went by the name of Guy. He was born on 20 November 1931, near Herndon, Jackson Township, Northumberland County, PA. He was the son of Guy Edwin Klinger and Helen Lorene Lemon. Merle Guy Klinger was baptized on 1 April 1932, at his parents' home, by Rev. G.E. Klick, Herndon RD, Jackson Township, Northumberland County, PA. Merle got his right hand caught in an electric pump in Herndon, after which he was taken to Geisinger Hospital where 3 fingers were amputated. After graduating from high school in 1949, he moved to New York City and became an interior decorator. He died on 9 March 2015, New York, NY, at age 83.¹ He was buried on 17 March 2015, at Herndon Cemetery, Herndon, Northumberland County, PA.

NEW YORK CITY — Merle Guy Klinger, 83, of New York City, passed away on March 9, 2015, in Queens New York City.
He was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Jackson Township, Pa., a son of the late Guy and Helen Klinger.
Merle moved with his family to Herndon, Pa., and grew up on the family gas station located in Herndon.
He was a 1949 graduate of Mahanoy Joint High School. After graduation he went to New York City and attended the New York School of Interior Decoration, and became an interior decorator.
Merle was employed by several prestigious firms, including Hattie Carnegie in New York City.
He is survived by his twin brother, Kenneth and his wife, Emma Jane; a number of nieces and nephews; and his cousin and caregiver, Linda Pearson of New York City.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary, and one brother, Carlos.
Interment will be held today [March 17th] in the Herndon Cemetery.¹

     Carlos Albert Klinger was born on 11 March 1899, Gratz, Dauphin County, PA.¹ He was the son of Milton C. Klinger and Sarah Ellen Schwalm. Carlos enlisted in the Army at Syracuse, NY, June 22, 1917 and was assigned to Company D, 38th Infantry, which was part of the 3rd Division ("Rock of the Marne") in France, until September 14, 1917, when he was transferred to Company D, 49th Infantry with which he served until October 6, 1918. On July 18, 1918, Company D departed from Brooklyn, NY, aboard the SS Regina De Italia, an Italian passenger ship that was chartered as a US troopship. The passenger list shows his name as "Carlos J. Klinger," but gives his correct service number, 299972. On October 6, 1918, he was transferred to Company L, 112th Infantry, which was part of the 28th Infantry Division. On April 12, 1919, he was promoted to private first class. He returned to America aboard the USS Pocohontas, that departed St. Nazaire, France, April 19, 1919, arriving in Philadelphia April 30. He was honorably discharged May 6, 1919, at Camp Dix, NJ, when he was listed as 5% disabled.^2,3,4,5 At the time of the 1920 Census, "Carl" was single and living with his mother and siblings in Shamokin, Coal Township, Northumberland County. He was working as a driver in a coal mine.⁶ Carlos died as a result of a mine accident on Feb. 21, 1920, at the North Franklin Colliery, in Trevorton, PA. He was buried the same day as his brother Fred. A short newspaper account of the accident under the headline "Brothers Injured in Same Way at Same Hour" states:
"Two brothers, Carlos and Fred Klinger, of Shamokin, employed at widely separated collieries, were similarly injured at the same hour Saturday, the former dying at the state hospital a short time after his admittance, while the other is lying at the point of death, unapprised of the death of his brother. Both young men were squeezed between a trip of wagons and the rip of a gangway."
It is questionable whether this newspaper account is correct. According to other family members, Frederick was injured on Friday February 20 and, apparently, was first taken home. According to Roy M. Klinger, his brother, Fred's brother Carlos persuaded Fred to go to the hospital, where he died fourteen days later. Carlos was injured the next day, Saturday the 21st, in much the same way. Carlos was taken to Shamokin Hospital with head injuries and died in the operating room, the same day.

Shamokin, Pa., March 8. Fred Klinger, aged 18 years, employed as a driver at the Cameron colliery, where he was injured two weeks ago, died on Saturday at the Shamokin Shamokin State Hospital from injuries received when he was squeezed between between a mine wagon and prop.
Son of a widowed mother, another another sad feature of the passing of young Klinger is the fact that his brother, Carlos A. Klinger, aged 21 years, was injured at the North Franklin colliery the day' after Fred received his fatal, injuries and died at the Shamokin State Hospital a few hours after his admission.
Harrisburg Telegraph, 08 Mar 1920, Mon, Page 2.^7,8 Carlos Albert Klinger died on 21 February 1920, Coal Township, Northumberland County, PA, at age 20.¹ He was buried on 26 February 1920, at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.¹
     Tombstone says: "Carlos Klinger; died Feb. 21, 1920; Aged 20 yrs., 11 mos. & 10 das."

     Frederick Daniel Klinger also went by the name of Fred. He was born on 28 February 1901. He was the son of Milton C. Klinger and Sarah Ellen Schwalm. At the time of the 1920 Census, Fred was single and living with his mother and siblings in Shamokin, Coal Township, Northumberland County. He was working in a coal mine.¹ Frederick died as result of mine accident on Friday, February 20, 1920, at the Cameron Colliery, Shamokin, PA. The accident occurred a day before his brother Carlos was killed in a similar accident in Trevorton, PA. Fred was apparently first taken home but then persuaded to go to the hospital where he remained until his death fourteen days later.
According to his brother, Roy M. Klinger, Fred, who was driving mules at the time, was squeezed between a group of mine cars and the side of a tunnel.

     Roy Milton Klinger also went by the name of Shorty.¹ He was born on 19 September 1906, Halifax Township, Dauphin County, PA.² He was the son of Milton C. Klinger and Sarah Ellen Schwalm. Roy Milton Klinger married Doris Helen Presher, daughter of Herbert Leroy Presher and Dollie Mabel Lunn, on 3 August 1929, Cattaraugus County, NY.³ At the time of the 1930 Census, Roy and his wife Doris were living with Doris's parents Herbert and Dollie Presher in Shinglehouse, Potter County, PA, with their infant daughter Joanne. Little Genesee, Nov. 4. A three-year-old tot was fatally injured in an unusual accident Thursday afternoon about 1:00 o'clock near her home in the Little Genesee-Shinglehouse road when struck by an automobile.
The dead child was: JANICE E. LAMPHERE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester C. Lamphere, Little Genesee, R. D. She suffered a fractured skull, broken nose and other injuries.
The child was struck by a car owned and driven by Roy M. Klinger of Shinglehouse. Klinger told Private E. F. Strosahl of the Pennsylvania Motor Police, who investigated, that the little girl ran directly in front of his car.
According to the report, Klinger was on his way from Bolivar to Shinglehouse. The Lamphere girl, together with some other children, was playing in front of her parents' home. As the Klinger car neared the children, the little girl, the driver said, darted into the road. He swerved to one side of the highway and succeeded in missing the child but as the car was brought back in to the road, a door of the machine swung open and struck the tot.
She was rushed to the Olean General Hospital, where she died at about 2:15 o'clock. Coroner Philip R. Shaw of Coudersport said death was caused by the fractured skull. Private Strosahl said the driver was blameless.

SHINGLEHOUSE -- Roy M. "Shorty" Klinger, 83, of 80 Academy St., a Shinglehouse businessman, died Monday, Sept. 10, 1990, at Olean General Hospital, Olean, N. Y., after a short illness.
Born Nov. 19 1906, in Halifax, he was a son of the late Milton and Sarah E. (Schwalm) Klinger. In 1929 he married the former Doris H. Presher.
Mr. K!inger was a resident of Shinglehouse most of his life. He served with the Navy during World War II.
He' was self-employed for 54 years, owning a shoe repair shop, dry cleaning business, a Western Auto store and Shorty's Sporting Goods, all of Shinglehouse. He later was employed at the Olean House, AVX Corp., Olean, and was a dog enforcement officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Klinger was a member of Sharon Lodge 598, F&AM, Shinglehouse, Coudersport Consistory, Sharon Grange, National Rifle Association and Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun Club; member and past commander of Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530; and a life member of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joanne E. Appleby of Shinglehouse and Jeanette M. Mingus of Wellsville, N.Y; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Ira C, and a sister, Sarah Schmeltz, both of Sunbury.
Three brothers, Guy Klinger, Carlos Klinger and Fred Klinger, and a sister, Carrie Zimmerman, preceded him in death.
The funeral was conducted Wednesday in Shinglehouse.

     Milton C. Klinger is also referred to as Charles Milton and Carlos Milton Klinger in some sources. Several of the Klinger's Church Baptismal listings for his children record Milton's name as "Milton C. Klinger." In the 1880 Census for Lykens Twp., Dauphin County, Daniel and Sevilla's eldest son is listed, apparently, as "Chas." (age 2 as of the date of the enumeration, June 14, 1880), although that is not entirely clear, because it appears that the enumerator attempted to correct the original spelling.¹
He was born on 27 February 1877, Northumberland County, PA, probably somewhere near Hebe, as he was baptized at St. David's Church in Hebe, although his death certificate lists his birthplace as Dauphin County.^2,3 He was the son of Daniel Klinger Jr. and Sevilla Shaffer. Milton C. Klinger was baptized on 3 June 1877, St. David's Lutheran and Reformed Church, Hebe, Jordan Township, Northumberland County, PA; Name listed as "Charles Milton." Sponsors for the baptism were "Daniel and Phrene Schaeffer." These were probably the grandparents, Sevilla Shaffer's parents, Daniel W. Shaffer and his second wife, Frany Snyder. According to the Shaffer book, Sevilla had a step-sister named Phrene Elmira, but she was born in 1875 and would not have been quite two years old then.^4,5 He was confirmed on 8 April 1894 Zion (Klinger's) Lutheran and Reformed Church, Erdman, Dauphin County, PA; name listed as "Milton C. Klinger."⁶ He and Sarah Ellen Schwalm obtained a marriage license on 8 August 1894; The license certificate states that "Milton C. Klinger was born in Northumberland Co. on the 28th day of Feb'y A.D. 1877, that he resides at Dauphin Co. Pa., that he is by occupation Laborer. . and that he has never been married before." It also states that "Ellen Schwalm was born Mahantango Twp. the 10th day of Jan'y, A.D. 1874, that she resides at Klingerstown, PA., and is by occupation Maid, that she has never been married before." The license acknowledges that the consent of the "Respective Fathers, residing at Sch. and Dauphin Cos." was filed on August 6, 1894. The "duplicate" certificate was returned by H.R. Hottenstein" on August 20, 1894.⁷ Milton C. Klinger married Sarah Ellen Schwalm, daughter of Frederick Stein Schwalm and Sarah Ann Rubendall, in August 1894; As of January, 1900, the time of the 1900 Census, Milton and "Ellen" had been married 6 years.
     The 1900 Census for Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA includes the following listing: Klinger, Milton C., M, born Feb. 1877, age 23, married 6 years, Day Laborer, employed 4 months, living in a rented house; Ellen, wife, F, born June [Jan ?]. 1874, age 26, married 6 years, mother of 3 children, 3 children living; Guy E., son, M, born Jan. 1895, age 5; Carrie E., daughter, F, born Feb. 1897, age 3; Carlos A., son, M, born Mar. 1899, age 1.⁸ The 1900 Census for Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA lists Milton's household as follows: Milton C. Klinger died on 4 February 1918, Trevorton, Northumberland County, PA, at age 40 An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer reprted:

Shamokin Father Despondent Over Soldier Sons and Sick Daughter

SHlAMOKIN, Pa., Feb. 4. Worry over the fact that two of his sons had been summoned into the army through draft and the serious illness of a young daughter, drove Milton Klinger, 55, to commit suicide by shooting at his home at Trevorton, near here, early this morning. Klinger had assisted his wife in caring for a daughter dangerously ill with pneumonia. On suggestion of Mrs. Klinger, he retired to rest before reporting for his labor's in the mines.
The report of a shot from Klinger's bedroom attracted the wife, who found him lying on the floor with the right side of the head blown away. Klinger had placed the muzzle of a shotgun behind the right ear and with the great toe of the right foot had pressed the trigger. He leaves a large family.

At the time, Milton and Ellen were living in Trevorton, PA, just off Tenth Street, near the railroad. Sometime after Milton's death, Ellen moved her family to Shamokin and lived in half of a double house owned by her daughter and son-in-law Carrie and Grant Zimmerman. This is where Ellen was living at the time of the 1920 Census.
The death certificate records that Milton was working as a lanorer in the mines.^10,3,11 He was buried on 8 February 1918, at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.¹² After Milton's death, his family lived in Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA. The 1920 Census for Coal Township, Northumberland County, lists Milton's widow "Ellen Klinger" as head of a household that included 5 sons and a daughter. The Census indicates that the family was living in rented housing on Walnut Street, adjacent to Grant and Carrie Zimmerman, Elen's son-in-law and daughter. Carlos Klinger notes that the Zimmerman's owned the double house, and Elen and her children lived in one-half of it. Carlos Klinger also notes that Elen and her family moved to Shamokin after her husband Milton died in 1918 (in Trevorton), first living in the 1100 block of West Walnut Street in the house owned by the Zimmermans. Sometime between about 1921 and 1923 they moved to the corner of Lynn Street and Bay Street and lived there until about 1932.¹³ In 1930, Milton's widow Sarah Elen was head of a household on Lynn Street, Shamokin, Coal Township, Northumberland County, PA, that included her youngest son Ira and her daughter Sarah Sevilla and son-in-law Frank Schmeltz.¹⁴

     Sarah Sevilla Klinger also went by the name of Sevilla. She was born on 21 October 1909, near Fearnot, Hubley Township, Schuylkill County, PA.^1,2 She was the daughter of Milton C. Klinger and Sarah Ellen Schwalm. Sarah Sevilla Klinger was baptized on 12 December 1909, Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA; Baptismal record at Klinger's Church indicates:

"Sarah Sevilla, da. of Milton C. Klinger and w. Ellen (nee Schwalm).
     b. Oct. 21, 1909, bapt. Dec. 12, 1909, sp. the parents."³ As of 10 March 1928,her married name was Schmeltz.⁴ She married Frank Gideon Schmeltz, son of Reuben Schmeltz and Sarah Emma Unger, on 3 October 1928, Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA; Rev. Gearhardt officiated.⁴ In 1930, Sevilla and her husband Frank, along with their son Lee, were living with Sevilla's mother on Lynn Street, Shamokin, Coal Township, Northumberland County, PA. Frank was a driver for a gas company.⁵ Sarah Sevilla Klinger died on 31 October 1997, Community Hospital, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, at age 88.⁶

SUNBURY — Sarah Sevilla Schmeltz, 88, of the Mansion Nursing Home died Friday, Oct. 31,1997, at Sunbury Community Hospital.
She was born Oct. 21, 1909, in Fearnot, the daughter of the late Milton and Sarah Ellen (Schwalm) Klinger. On Oct. 3, 1928, she married Frank G. Schmeltz, who died March 8, 1962.
Formerly of Grier City and West Hazleton, she lived in Sunbury for 25 years.
Mrs. Schmeltz was a homemaker.
A former quilter at the Grier City Union Sunday School, she was also known for her crocheting.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn I. of Sunbury and Lee D. of Las Cruces, N.M; two daughters, Mae K. Kilby of District Heights, Md., and Lois G. Curcio of Rockville, Md; 11 grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lamar Christ Funeral Home, RR2 Tamaqua, by the Rev. David Searing. Burial will be in White Church Cemetery, RR4 Tamaqua.
Visitors may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.⁷

     Sevilla was living at the Mansion Nursing Home in Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, prior to her death. Previously she had lived in Grier City and West Hazelton, PA.⁸

     Ira Charles Klinger was born on 10 January 1915, Trevorton, Northumberland County, PA. He was the son of Milton C. Klinger and Sarah Ellen Schwalm. Ira Charles Klinger married Mary Abigail Landau, daughter of Charles B. Laundau and Susan Gibbons, on 20 September 1947, Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA. According to an undated newspaper clipping, Ira (Bud) resigned his position in Sunbury as an IRS agent to become an in house accountant for Rea & Derrick, Inc., Northumberland. The article indicated that he had lived in Sunbury since 1947 and had resigned rather than be transferred by the IRS to Washington, D.C., because he did not want to move his family, who lived at 909 Market Street. Bud had graduated from Frackville Hight School in 1932, Strayer College of Accountancy in Washington, D.C. in 1938, after which he went to work for the Farm Security Administration. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the US Army in the Philippines, from which he was discharged as a Technical Sergeant. He returned briefly to the Department of Agriculture, before joining the IRS.
     Ira served in the US Army in the Philippines during World War II, and later was an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service and eventually a self-employed accountant in Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA. He and Mary lived on Market Street in Sunbury had no children.¹ Ira Charles Klinger died on 7 May 1993, Community Hospital, Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA, at age 78.¹

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, and Sunbury Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 713. He was a life member of American Legion Post 201 and Friendship Hose Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, M. Jane Shepperson of Danville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sarah Schmeltz of Sunbury.
A son, G. Howard Klinger, died in 1948.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Fifth and Market streets, by the Rev. Martin Young. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
Visitors may call from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of the service at the church.
