Sarah Ann Rubendall

F, #175, b. 28 August 1838, d. 2 July 1911
Sarah Ann (Rubendall) Schwalm, who according to Guy E. Klinger, smoked a pipe
Last Edited=2 Dec 2021
Sarah Ann Rubendall also went by the name of Katie.
Name is also spelled: "Rubandhal." Sarah's family lived in the vicinity of Red Cross, PA. After the death of her parents, Sara went to live with Elijah Byerly, near Mandata, PA, and is shown to be living there by the 1850 census. (Communication from Dennis Byerly, 1997.)
Franya Marie Rubendall's Internet genealogy of Descendants of Jacob Rubendall lists her name as "Sarah Ann" and shows a marriage date of March 29, 1902. It also lists a "first husband" for her as "Israel Byerly," b. 1855, d. 3 March 1927, buried in Stone Valley Cemetery. She lists one daughter of this union, as "Mary Adams," who is buried in Urban, PA.
There is some question about whether Sarah may have fathered an illegitimate son, Israel Byerly. Dennis Byerly (2001) writes:
"Perhaps I should clarify my position about Sarah Rubendall and Elias Byerly. As you know, the Johannes Schwalm book states that after Sarah died, her probate papers list among her survivors an Isreal Byerly - a son. I had been trying to find her ancestry for awhile and when I did I found that her father died when she was 6 and her mother died when she was 11 and she went to live with the Elijah Byerly family. She is listed as living in that household in the 1850 census for Lower Mahanoy Twp. of Northumberland Co. I sent for the death Certificate for Israel Byerly and that lists his father as Elias Byerly and his mother as "Katie Rubendall". Sarah did have a sister Catherine who was living with another family in 1850. I don't deny that there was an illegitimate child born to either Sarah or Catherine with Elias Byerly as the father, but I don't think anyone knows enough to state what the circumstances were under which the child was conceived."
According to Franya Marie Rubendall, author of "Descendants of Jacob Rubendall" (Not for Publication):
"Israel was born 1855. Sarah would of been 17 years old. She married Frederick in 1857. Per the families request: As well as where this information came from. The following can not be printed or entered in as notes accessible to everyone. They feel it is embarrassing and a disgrace to the family. Sarah worked for the Byerly family as a housekeeper/maid. One of Elijah's son's 'forced himself upon Katie and a son was born from this.' The family didn't talk opening of this and Elijah to correct what is done wrongly took care of Israel when he could. He is listed in will. Sarah's nickname was "Katie". He is Sarah's child. . . born prior to Frederick and Sarah's marriage."1 She was born on 28 August 1838, Northumberland County, PA.2 She was the daughter of Abraham Rubendall and Magdalena Carl. At the time of the 1850 Census, Sarah was 12 years old and living in the household of Elijah and Elizabeth (Radel) Byerly.3 As of 29 March 1856,her married name was Schwalm. Sarah Ann Rubendall married Frederick Stein Schwalm, son of Frederick Schwalm and Catharina Stein, on 29 March 1857.4 Some sources suggest that Sarah Ann Rubendall and Frederick Stein Schwalm were married on 29 March 1856. Sarah Ann Rubendall died on 2 July 1911, Klingerstown, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 72.5,2 She was buried on 5 July 1911, at Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.2
