  • He was the son of George Allen Lenker and Norma Eleanor Quigley.1
  • Ronald Bruce Lenker died on 31 July 1965, Steuben County, NY, at age 24. Newspaper article:
Prattsburgh Man Killed, Wife Hurt In Car Crash Within Sight of Home
    Purchased 1965 Auto Thursday
PRATTSBURG - Ronald Lenker, 24, on Army re-enlistment leave about two weeks after service in Korea, was killed and his wife, Mildred, 23, was injured at 1 a.m. Saturday wnen the new car he was driving rammed into two trees with in sight of their home along Mill St. just outside of Prattsburg.
The father of three young children, he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later on arrival at Davenport Hospital near Bath.
He was Steuben County's 11th highway fatality this year.
Dr. Roy Robinson of Wayland, a county coroner, issued a certificate of accidental death caused by a laceration of the left lung from rib fractures. The victim also sustained fractures of the skull and left leg.
Mrs. Lenker sustained lacera tions of the face, arms and legs. 5he was treated at the hospital and was released.
The young couple apparently were homeward bound in the brand new 1965 Ford 2-door sedan which was bought Thursday. It was first used Friday morning. The instrument panel showed it had been driven a total of 147 miles.
The auto was virtually demolished as it crashed with its left side into a three-foot-thick maple tree and then another across from the home of Wayne Dinehart.
It came to rest along the road shoulder after skidding 195 feet, totally crumpled, its rear axle torn off and every window gone.
As the vehicle came to a halt, its gas tank was flung about 20 feet and caught fire as it landed on the highway. Prattsburg firemen extinguished the blaze.
The noise of the crash awakened Mr. and Mrs. Dinehart. Dinehart dashed out of his home to find Mrs. Lenker staggering across tne lawn toward him, he said.
Sheriff's Deputy William Underbill said the car went off the street, part of County Rt. 74, and traveled 75 feet before hitting the first tree.
It bounced off that and was airborne for 29 feet when it hit the second tree. The car then skidded sideways and around for 195 feet before coming to a stop about 500 feet from the Lenker home.
Friends of the couple said Mr. Lenker was home on leave after six years in the Army ending with service in Korea and had re-enlisted for six years. He was to have gone to West Germany after a 40-day leave.
