  • The son of Abraham & Catherine (Hoffman) Hess, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. He fathered Harvey Adam Lincoln (b. 11/25/64) with Ella Amanda Roadbach, but they apparently never married.
    A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 19, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 20 as a private with Co. H, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.
    He married Amanda S. Klinger August 6, 1865, in Berrysburg, Dauphin County, and fathered Cora Minerva (b. 04/30/66), Anna Victoria (b. 08/04/67), Ida P. (b. 03/10/69, d. 11/06/70), Mary Deborah Ann (b. 10/26/72), William Henry Harrison (b. 10/26/74), John Quincy Adams (b. 06/28/76), Oscar C. (b. 01/25/82), and Mable Catherine (b. 02/28/64). He later moved his family to Schuylkill County where he remained until his death from "aortic stenosis."

    Mr. Stutzman was the son of the late William and Cora Hess Stutzman. Before retiring in 1964 he had been employed as a maintenance supervisor by the Reading Railroad for 41 years. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Shoemakersville.
    Surviving are his widow, the former Alma L. Lenhart; two daughters, Alma L. and Shirley G., wife of William J. Holland, both of Cherry Hill N.J., and a son, John L., of Hermitage; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

    John L. Stutzman, 970 Biscayne Drive, Hermitage, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, in his residence. He was 85. Mr. Stutzman was born April 8, 1921, in Reading, Pa., a son of the late John W. and Alma L. Lenhart Stutzman. He graduated in 1939 from Reading High School. John attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, and received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Kutztown (Pa.) Teacher’s College. He later earned his master’s degree in education from Slippery Rock State University. John retired in 1984 from Sharpsville School District, where he was a sixth-grade elementary school teacher for 28 years. He also coached grade school basketball and was actively involved with the Sharpsville High School athletic department. During the summer and at times after school, he worked for the former Copey’s Moving Co., Sharon. He was a member of IHS Gospel Ministries Church, Hermitage; and was a former longtime member of South Pymatuning (Township) Community Church. John was a lifetime member of Pennsylvania State and National Education associations, and was a volunteer tax preparer for many years with AARP, a retired person’s organization. He enjoyed fishing, camping and time shared with his family, particularly his grandchildren. John served in the Army with the Railway Operating Battalion during World War II. Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Helen P. Summers, whom he married Nov. 2, 1946; a daughter, Patricia “Patty” L. Chaya and her husband Edward, Hermitage; a son, John “Jack” R. Stutzman and his wife Patricia, Fleetwood, Pa; and five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Louise Stutzman and Shirley Ruth Holland; and a brother, James William Stutzman. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to IHS Gospel Ministries Church, 786 Karen Lane, Hermitage 16148.

    Funeral services were held Saturday morning from the Weissinger Funeral Home, Minersville, for Mrs. Minnie C. Stutzman, a former resident of Minersville, who died Tuesday evening at the home of her son, Francis Stutzman, in Slatington. The Rev. Sterling Bashore, pastor of Friedens Lutheran Church, Llewellyn officiated, and interment was in Mount Peace Cemetery.
    Born in Sacramento, August 29, 1899, Mrs. Stutzman was a daughter of the late Daniel and Ida Koppenhaver Coleman. In ill health for the past four years, she was last employed by Phillips Van Heusen Company in the Minersville and Pottsville plants. She was a member of Frieden's Lutheran Church, Llewellyn. Her husband, Ellis Stutzman, preceded her in death in 1965.
    Surviving are a son, Francis of Slatington; three daughters, Mrs. Minerva Tyson of Harrisburg; Mrs. Agnes Raudenbush of Sudlersville, Md; Mrs. Anna Mae Somers of Pine Grove RD2; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Minerva I. Tyson, 87, of Harrisburg, died Wednesday at Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg.
    Born in Silverton, Feb. 1, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Ellis and Minnie Coleman Stutzman.
    She was a member of Linglestown Church, of God and the Linglestown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
    Preceding her in death were her husband, William, on May 3, 1988; a daughter, Donna Kuhns, in 1980.
    Surviving are three sons, William Tyson II, Harrisburg, Leroy Bainbridge, Grantville, and James Bainbridge, Harrisburg; a sister, Anna "Honey" Somers, Orwigsburg; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Linglestown. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg.

    Roy B. Bainbridge, formerly of Llewellyn, died suddenly at his residence, Blue Ridge Manor, Harrisburg, Wednesday morning.

    He leaves to survive his mother, of Newtown, his wife, Minerva Stutzman Bainbridge, two sons, Leroy and James, and a daughter, Dona Marie, all at home; and these brothers and sisters: William, of Orwigsburg; Mrs. George Swope, Llewellyn; Mrs. Anna Lehman, Pottsville; Howard Tremont; Clifford, Newtown.
    The funeral will be Saturday afternoon from the Halm Brothers Funeral Home, Minersville. Interment in Mt. Peace Cemetery.
