William Victor Wiest1,2

M, #15379, b. 7 February 1873, d. 30 March 1906
  • Last Edited: 31 Dec 2022
  • William Victor Wiest was born on 7 February 1873, Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, PA.1
  • He was the son of Schartel Klinger Wiest and Elmyra Elizabeth Erdman.3
  • At the time of the 1880 Census, William was living with his mother Mya [?] Erdman in the household of her parents George and Judith Erdman in Upper Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, PA.4
  • William is not mentioned in his father's obituary published in 1903, about 3 years before William died, perhaps because his father and mother (Myra or Myah Erdman) were not married. When William was 7 years old he was living with his mother in her parents' household. Myah was listed as single in the 1900 Census.5
  • William Victor Wiest married Elizabeth Carl, daughter of Daniel Carl and Catherine Wolf, circa December 1895.2,6,7
  • Some sources suggest that William Victor Wiest was married to Polly Minerva Erdman, but church records at Salem Church, Rough and Ready, show that William's wife (between the years of at least 1903 and the time of his death in 1906) was "Eliza" or "Lizzie" Carl. Additionally, Polly's application for a marriage license with George D. Wiest, in March, 1901, indicates that she was not previously married.1,8,9
  • The 1900 Census lists the following household in Barry Township, Schuylkill County: William Weist, 27, married 4 years; farm laborer; Eliza, wife, 25, married 4 years, mother of 3 children, all of whom were living; Thomas, son, born Oct. 1896, 3; Lottie, daughter, born Jan. 1899, 1: and Katie Reed, step-daughter, born May 1893, 7.10
  • William Victor Wiest died on 30 March 1906, State Hospital, Butler Township, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 33, as a result of injuries received in a mining accident.3,2
  • A newspaper reported the mining accident:
William Wiest, of Gordon, was injured by falling down the slope at Potts colliery, and sustained a fracture of the base of the skull and concussion of the brain. His condition last evening was very critical.
Wiest was one of a gang of men engaged in timbering the slope, which pitches at an angle of seventy degrees. While in the act of standing a prop be missed his footing and went hurtling down until he reached a landing of a lower lift 300 feet below the point from which he fell. When workmen reached him he was unconscious. Had he moved a foot be would have rolled down the other lift. The injured man was hoisted from the mine and rushed to the hospital.
Three other workmen were hurt in the same slope during the night, but their injuries were not serious.

  • He was buried on 3 April 1906, at Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Rough and Ready, Schuylkill County, PA.12,3,13
  • The 1910 Census lists William's children and his widow Lizzie living in Gordon, Schuylkill County, in the following household: Lizzie Weist, head, 35, widow, mother of 9 children, 6 living, servant for private family; Kate E., daughter, 16, servant for private family; Thomas E., son, 13; Lottie E., daughter, 11; Mamie G., daughter, 9; Mattie E., daughter, 7; and William D., son, 3.14
