  • At the time of the 1930 Census, John and Alice were living on Market Street in Pillow, Dauphin County, PA, where he was a plumbing and heating contractor. Their household included 9 children.6
  • In 1944, 4 of John and Alice's sons, and one son-in-law, were serving in the armed forces. Sons Fred and John were in the US Navy, while Owen and Byron were in the Army and Army Air Corp respectively. Son-in-law Raymond Rowe was in the Army stationed in England.7
  • In 1947 John and Alice purchased a piece of property in Gratz and built a house on it. They lived there for many years. Eventually they sold part of the land to their son Byron and eventually sold the house to their son Clarence. John was a tinsmith and had a shop on the lot for a number of years. John and Alice had an ice cream store nearby. Eventually, Clarence, also known as Chuck, followed in his father's footsteps and became a tinsmith and plumber. John and Clarence installed many of the standing seam tin roofs in the Gratz area.2

    Surviving are his wife, Alice E. Phillips Bingaman and eleven children: Mrs. Andrew Ehringer, Dauphin; Fred Bingaman, Warminister, Pa; Byron Bingaman, Hellan R. D. Pa; Mrs. Raymind Rowe Lykens; Clarence Bingaman, Gratz; Donald Bingaman, Lykens; Mrs. Russell Schadle, Gratz; Owen, John, Jr., Richard, and James, all at home; also 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
    The funeral was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Simeons Lutheran Church at Gratz. with Rev. W. Z. Artz officiating. Interment was in the Gratz Union Cemetery.

    Clarence F. "Cluck" Bingaman, 93, of Gratz, passed away on May 18, 2020, at the Premier at Susquehanna, Millersburg. He was born in Pillow on October 8, 1926, a son of the late Alice and John Bingaman. Cluck served in the Navy and was the owner of Bingaman Plumbing and Heating.
    He was a member of Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz, Alvin E. Long Legion, Mandata, Gratz Fire Company, Gratz Borough Council Water and Sewer Authority, and the Gratz Union Cemetery Board. Cluck loved people and children, showing it through his humor and actions, everyone who knew him loved him. He was a positive impact on his family and community..
    Cluck is survived by three daughters, Jane Louise Lahr, Maryann Snyder, Bellann Klinger; two sons, Robert Bingaman, Alan Bingaman; eleven grandchildren, several great and great great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Bingaman and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bingaman, brothers, Fritz, Richard, John, Owen, Henry, and Jim, sisters, Catherine, Celia, and Betty.
    A memorial service will be live-streamed on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at 11:00 am, please visit the Funeral Home website for the link. Interment will take place in the Gratz Union Cemetery, Gratz.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz.5

  • The 1930 Census lists Chauncey L. Wirt, age 25, living in a household in Sunbury, PA, that included his married sister, Violet Conrad and her family, as well as his father, "Edwin Wirt" and brother Tolbert. The Census indicates that Chauncey was married, about 2 years, but does not list a wife.5

  • A 1933 city directory lists Luther and his wife "Jean" living at 572 Queen Street, Sunbury, PA. It is not clear if this the same person listed as "Mildred" in the 1940 Census. In 1942, when Luther enlisted in the US Army, he was listed as "separated, without dependents."7,8

    Born in Dalmatia, March 24, 1904, he was a son of the late J. Edwin and Bertha Klinger Wirt.
    A veteran of World War II, he served with the Army. Mr. Wirt was of the Lutheran faith.
    He was a member of the Sunbury Ealges 503.
    He is survived by one son, Eddie Wirt, address, unknown: several grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Violet E. Conrad of Sunbury; and one brother, Talbort G. Wirt of Phillipsburg.
    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Zweier Funeral Home, Sunbury, by the Rev. David Harris, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Sunbury. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
    Friends may call in the funeral home Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

  • At the time of the 1930 Census, Violet and her husband Theodore R. Conrad were living in a household that included three of their children -- Theodore R. Jr. (3 years 5 months old); Maxine J. (1 year 8 months old) and Arlene F. (2 months old). According to the Census, Theodore was first married at age 20 (6 years earlier) while Violet was first married at age 18 (only 2 years earlier). While it seems likely that Violet was the mother of Maxine and Arlene, it is not clear whether she was the mother of Theodore Jr.3

    She was born June 15, 1909, in Herndon, a daughter of the late James Edwin and Bertha (Klinger) Wirt. She was married to Theodore R. Conrad Sr. who died in 1976.
    She was employed as a psychiatric aide by Selinsgrove Center before retiring and was a former employee of Westinghouse Corp., Sunbury.
    Mrs. Conrad was a 50-year member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sunbury.
    Surviving are one son, Theodore R. Jr. of Sunbury; three daughters, Maxine J. Bingaman of Sunbury, Arlene F. Carr of Northumberland and JoAnn C. Klinger of RR2 Sunbury; 14 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and four great-greatgrandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Earl, in 1944; one grandson, Daniel; and two brothers, Chaunce and Talbert.
    The funeral will be conducted at the convenience of the family by the Rev. Jerry Caswell of Friendship Baptist Church, Watsontown. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
    There will be no viewing or visitation.
