Harold Arthur Deppen1

M, #21231, b. 13 June 1918, d. 3 March 1939
  • Last Edited: 13 Apr 2020
  • Harold Arthur Deppen was born on 13 June 1918, Gratz, Dauphin County, PA.2
  • He was the son of Harvey Arthur Deppen and Blanche Mae Hepner.1
  • Some sources record that Harold Arthur Deppen was born in 1919.1
  • He died on 3 March 1939, Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, PA, at age 20. According to teh Death Certificate, Harold died as a result of injuried incurred when he struck a car while on a motocycle. A newspaper reported the following results of a coroner's inquest:
Dr. Sidney Kallaway, Northumberland county coroner, conducted an inquest at Shamokin into the death of Harold Deppen, 20, of Pillow, instantly killed Friday evening, March 3, when the motorcycle he was driving collided with two other cars on a hill one-quarter mile from his home town.
Testimony was heard from Patrolman William N. Leeser, of the Lykens State Motor Police, who investigated; Clyde E. Reitz, of Dornsife, driver of one of the cars involved; Paul R. Bucher, an occupant of the Reitz car at the time of the crash: and Harrv W. Reichert, driver of the other machine.
Reitz and Bucher said they were traveling east down an incline, when about twenty feet away they saw a motorcycle on their side of the road, approaching in the opposite direction. Both related how Reitz tried to stop his machine and swerve in an effort to avoid the crash. Reichert, traveling west testified the cycle was attempting to pass his machine as the Reitz car approached.
Reichert testified that the motorcycle bearing Deppen and Schreffler, passed his car on both a hill and a curve as both vehicles traveled north from Pillow. Just after the motorcycle passed his car, Reichart said, he saw the car driven by Reitz approach from the opposite direction. The motor cycle driver made a quick turn but an instant later the machine crashed into the left front fender of the Reitz car, which, with the motorcycle, careened into an embankment. Deppen was fatally crusnea under the car.
State Motor Police from the Lykens detail presented a diagram indicating the manner in which the accident occurred.
After testimony was heard the jury, composed of W. J. Williams, w. n. lioiman. Ivan Runkle, F. N, Heffner, Harold Taylor and Stanley Walnock, all of Shamokin, returned tne following verdict:
"We the jury, in view of the eviidence given here, say that Harold Deppen met death through his own reckless management of his motorcycle, and we do hereby exonerate all other parties concerned of any blame."
Timothy Schreffler, 23, also of Pillow, an occupant on tne rear seat of the cycle at the time of the crash, who was critically injured, is reported slightly improved at Mary M. Packer hospital here.
