MAN FALLS IN MUD AND SUFFOCATES
Allen Deppen, 42, Residing Near Hebe, Meets Death in Tragic Manner When Seized With Epileptic Fit
VICTIM FOUND DEAD, FACE DOWN, IN MIRE Stricken with an epileptic fit, to which he had been subject for some years, Allen Deppen, aged 42 years, of near Hebe, this county, fell face down in soft earth yesterday afternoon and suffocated, his body having been found some time later by his aged father, John Deppen, a former attache of the courthouse at Sunbury, and with whom the son and his family made their home.
Deppen left home at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after having partaken of a heavy dinner, to do some work in a distant field. When he did not return home at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, his father started a search for him. In passing through the orchard near the home he cam[e] upon his son's body, lying with the face burled deeply in clay.
Dr. C.H. Malick, of Herndon, was summoned and pronounced the man dead, declaring death to have been due to suffocation as the result of the victim falling face downward in clay while in a state of epilepsy. Coroner Dr. A. J. Ancerawicz, of Kulpmont, was notified, went to the Deppen home and issued a death certificate giving sutfocation, superinduced by epilepsy, as the cause.
Allan Deppen was born and lived all his life near Hebe and was a successful farmer and carpenter. He is survived by his wife, his father, two sons, a daughter and several brothers and sisters.

Carrie E. Schwalm1,2

F, #20729, b. 3 May 1879, d. 6 March 1967
  • Last Edited: 14 Mar 2019
  • Carrie E. Schwalm was born circa 1884.3,4,5
  • Some sources record that Carrie E. Schwalm was born in January 1877, but this date, given in the 1900 Census, appears to be incorrect, because her mother Emma was only 10 years old in 1877.6
  • Some sources record that Carrie E. Schwalm was born on 3 May 1879 but this date, given in Deppen Family History, appears to be questionable. According to the 1900 Census, Carrie's parents had been married 17 years and their eldest daughter "Callie" had been born May 1883. This means that Emma was only 16 when she married Henry in about 1883. For Carrie to have been born in 1879, her mother Emma would have been only about 12 or 13 years old at the time. Subsequent Census records support a birth date of around 1883 or 1884.1,7
  • She was the daughter of Charles Henry Schwalm and Emma Jane Deppen.1
  • Some sources record that Carrie E. Schwalm was born in 1889, but this date, which appears in the Gratz History, is inconsistent with most other sources, except that the 1930 Census says that Carrie was 20 years old at the time of her marriage, which according to the 1900 Census occurred about 1899.2,8
  • At the time of the 1900 Census, Carrie and Clarence were living on East Market Street in Williamstown, Dauphin County, where Clarence was a blacksmith in coal mine. They had been married 1 year and had 1 child, a daughter Jennie M.6
  • She married Clarence U. Kratzer on 16 April 1904, Valley View, Schuylkill County, PA.2,1,9,6,10
  • At the time of the 1910 Census, Carrie and Clarence were living in Gratz, Dauphin County, in the following household: Clarence U. Kratzer, head, 36, married for the second time, a blacksmith operating his own shop; Carrie E., wife, 26, first one time, mother of 3 children, three of whom were surviving; Albert R., son, 3; Verna S., daughter; 5, Blanch M., daughter, 1 11/12; John Mc., son, 8; Jennie M., daughter, 11; Esta M., step-daughter, 9; and Lloyd Keiter, apprentice, 18. Because Carrie was the mother of only 3 of the 6 children listed, it is not exactly clear which were her children and which were likely Clarence's children from his first marriage.11
  • The 1920 Census for Gratz, Dauphin County, lists Carrie and Clarence in a household with 6 children: John, 18, a laborer in blacksmith shop; Verna, 15; Esta, 19, an employee in a shirt factory; Albert, 13; Blanche, 11; and Guy, 8. Clarence was the manager of a blacksmith shop.12
  • In 1930, Carrie and Clarence were still in Gratz, where there were 3 children in their household: Guy, 19; Ralph, 7; and Esta, 26, single, seamstress in a shirt factory.9
  • In 1940, Carrie was living in Gratz, Dauphin County, PA.1
  • Carrie E. Schwalm died on 6 March 1967, Myerstown, Lebanon County, PA, at age 87.13
  • Death notice:
    Mrs. Carrie Kratzer
Services for Mrs. Carrie E. Kratzer, 83, a former resident of Gratz, who died Monday at Myerstown Infirmarly, were held this afternoon at Gratz Evangelical Congregational Church. The Rev. C. B. Beans, her pastor, officiated.
She is survived by three sons, John, of Elizabethville; Dr. Guy of Allentown and the Rev. A. R. Kratzer, superintendent of the Bird and Rodgers Memorial Home; two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Schultz of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Blanche Troutman of Reading; and a sister, Mrs. Harry Otto, of Hegins.
Burial was in Union Cemcery, Gratz.
