    Independent Mine Explosion Kills Ashland R.D. Man
    Howard A. Klinger, 44, of Ashland. R. D., was killed instantly at 11 a. m. Monday in a mine explosion on Burnside mountain. Klinger and a fellow , worker, Allen Shoffler, of Marion Heights, were working in a slant off a slope, when a shot ignited a pocket of gas. The concussion caused Klinger to fall 45 feet down the slope, causing lnstantenous death. Shoffler was reported seriously injured in Shamokin Hospital. The mine is an independent operation about 1,000 feet east of the section where the highway crosses Burnside Mountain.
    Mr. Klinger was born January 7, 1911, at Gratz, son of the late Daniel E. and Bessie Bush Klinger. He was a member of Himmel's [Kimmel's] Reformed church at Ashland, R.D., and of the East Cameron Hose Company in Gowen City.
    He was a veteran of World War 2, having served, in the armored engineer demolition corps as technician fourth grade. He won the Bronze Star for heroic service in the European Theatre.
    He is survived by his wife, Ruth Kaschner Klinger; three brothers, Homer, of Gordon, Harold, Schuylkill Haven, and Nelson, Berry's Grove; five sisters, Mrs. George Keysock, Frackville, Mrs. Carl Kehler, Easton, Mrs; Alphonso Matalonas. Ashland. R.D., Mrs. Carl Clews, Millersville, and Mrs. Jacqueline Troutman, Ashland, R. D.
    Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., D.S.T., from the Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, R.D. 1, with burial Kimmel Cemetery, Ashland, R.D. Rev. Yohe, Reformed pastor, of Hegins, will officiate. There will be no viewing.
