    Mrs. Minnie F. Fetterolf, 68, wife of Charles Fetterolf, Hegins, died at her home Sunday following a lingering illness. She had been in failing health several years.
    Born in Valley View March 28, 1879, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Milton Underkoffler, she lived in the valley her entire lifetime and was a member of Friedens Church, Hegins.
    In addition to her husband, she is survived by the following children: Allen, Harrisburg; Joseph, Hegins; Mrs. Eugene Tinherro, Philadelphia; Charles Fetterolf, Forty-Fort; James, Bristol, Conn; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three brothers, Harry, Calvert, Vincent, Lebanon; two sisters, Mrs. Raymond McConnell, Miss Nellie Underkoffler, Lebanon.
    Services were held at the A. R. Buffington Funeral Home, Valley View, at 10,30 a. m. today, with further services in Friedens Church, Hegins. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hegins.

    Charles Fetterolf
    Charles Ellas Fetterolf, 101, of 106 N. Good Spring St., Hegins, died Sunday at Ashland Hospital where he had been a patient in the geriatric ward for three years.
    Mr. Fetterolf was born April 13, 1877 in Northumberland County and was the son of the late Elias and Phoebe Hunsinger Fetterolf. He had lived most of his life in Hegins where he had been a butcher. He was of the Protestant faith.
    He was preceded in death by his wife; the former Minnie Underkoffler, in 1929 and also by six children.
    Surviving are 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held Wednesday morning from' the Arthur R. Buffington Funeral Home, Valley View, with the Rev. Donald Wetzel, pastor of the Hegins Valley Charge of the United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hegins.

    A sad accident occurred to Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Huntzinger of East Hegins and their 5 year old daughter, Margaret, on the state highway a short distance out of Suedburg toward Pine. Grove, Sunday at 6:30 P. M. While on their return home from a visit to Mrs. Huntzinger's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Underkoffler, at Lebanon, in their Ford sedan, they were run into by a Hudson sedan, driven by Eugene Kelschner, a traveling salesman of Harrisburg, Pa., in trying to pass another car ahead of him both coming from Pine Grove. The impact was so great as to put both machines out of commission and seriously injuring Mrs. Huntzinger, who was immediately rushed to the Warne Hospital, Pottsville in their hospital ambulance where she died Monday morning, October 17th, aged 24 years had she lived until coming October 30.
    Mr. Huntzinger and his little daughter Margaret who was in the back ghter Margaret, who was in the back seriously hurt were brought to their home here by Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Brown of Outwood and a garage man, Bore, of Pine Grove in Mr. Brown's car, and both will recover. The funer[al] was held at the Grace Evangelical Thursday morning, October 20, with a short service at the... home and interment in the Frieden's Union Cemetery at Hegins and further services in the church connected with the cemetery, conducted by a former pastor of the Hegins Lutheran parish now of Noxen, Pa., who also confirmed and married her and baptized her daughter, assisted by the present pastor, the Rev. Amon Lichty, Jr. Deceased was a young wife and mother of exemplary character, closely attached to her family and with them a regular attendant at their church services. Undertaker Buffington of Hegins brought the body from the hospital to her home and had charge. Leaving to survive her of the immediate relatives are her husband and daughter, her parents, Charles Fetterolf and his wife, nee Underkoffler, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Underkoffler of Lebanon, and the following brothers and sisters: Allen Fetterolf, single of Philadelphia; Joseph Fetterolf, married and residing at Valley View; Irene Fetterolf, a nurse in the Episcopal Hospital Hospital in Philadelphia; and Charles E. and James Milton Fetterolf stlil at home.

    Vincent K. Underkoffler, 59, a retired Lebanon school teacher, died suddenly at his home, 923 Church St., this morning.
    Although he had been in ill health for the past several years, his death came as a shock to the community and members of the Lebanon School District.
    A prominent teacher at Henry Houck Junior High School, Underkoffler retired from the teaching profession this past February, after serving as a teacher of 37 years.
    At the time of his retirement, he was vice principal and teacher of mathematics at the Henry Houck School.
    He had been on a sabbatical leave of absence from the school from the latter part of October, 1960, until February 2 of this year due to illness. He retired from the teaching profession on the advice of his physician.
    Prior to assuming his position at Henry Houck, he taught at the Mahanoy City High School from 1924 to 1930.
    He was named as teacher at Henry Houck in 1930. He also served as assistant dramatic coach, football coach and director of school broadcasts. He was appointed vice principal in September 1956.

    He was graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1924 and from Lebanon High School in 1920.
    He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Little Underkoffler; one daughter, Doris, wife of James J. Arnold, Lebanon and two sons, Vincent Jr. and James Allen, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
    Five grandchildren and two brothers, Harry Underkoffler, Lebanon and Tolbert Underkoffler, Lancaster, also survive.

  • In 1930, Ralph and his wife Marie were living on South Frazier Street in Philadelphia, PA, where Ralph was a city policeman. They had been married 5 years and had 3 children.6
  • Both the 1930 and 1940 Censuses list two daughters born around 1930. One is variously listed as Marie or Marie C., and the other is listed as Katherine or Catherine N. Underkoffler. It is believed that the first os Marie Catherine who was born 27 Dec 1929, while the precise identity of the other is unclear.7,8

    Ralph S. Underkoffler, 72, a member of a family prominently identified with the early history of Lebanon County, died recently in St. Francis Hospital, Lynwood, Pa., according to word received here. He had been a resident of Rolling Hills, Calif.
    Underkoffler was a member of the Philadelphia Police Deportment from 1926 until his retirement in October of 1948, after which he resided in California.
    He was a native of Annville. His maternal ancestory traced its Dauphin-Lebanon County association back to the Revolution. One of his ancestors, Jacob Boitz, signed allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania in 1771, renouncing allegiance to George 3rd of Great Britain.
    Another ancestor, Stephen W. Boitz, served as a Lebanon County treasurer between 1881 and 1884 and as a justice of the peace in North AnnviDe ownship m 1865.
    Underkoffler served in the U.S. Army prior to joining the Philadelphia police department. He received several citations for police bravery.
    He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Ralph Jr. and William, and two daughters, Catherine and Marie, and a brother, Aaron. An uncle, Vincent Underkoffler, was at one time an assistant vice principal of Lebanon High School.
    He is buried in the national cemetery at Sawtelle, Calif.

  • Some sources (for example, www.findagrave.com) suggest that Dertha was a daughter of Josiah (or Joseph) K. Wehry (1848-1928), who was married to Hannah Smeltz (1850-1922). Josiah is buried at Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Rough and Ready, PA. This is not consistent with the records. Death certificates for five of Dertha's siblings listed in the 1900 Census indicate that their mother was "Hannah Long," which is what Dertha's marriage license application also states.6,7,8,9,10,11,12

    Also surviving are two grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren and a brother, Daniel Wehry, a guest at the Kepner Nursing Home, Elizabethtown.
