- She was the daughter of Edwin Lee Herb and Ida Minerva Rebuck.1
- Mary Goldie Rebecca Herb married Paul Daniel Bordner, son of Dorsey Allison Bordner and Maude Amelia Lubold, on 11 June 1945, Evangelical and Reformed Church Parsonage, Herndon, Northumberland County, PA.2
- Seven of Mary and Paul's children were killed in a fire in their home in Jordan Township, Northumberland County, PA. One newspaper reported:
Mother Shot, 7 Children Die As Home Burns
Youth Badly Burned Saving 5 From Doomed Herndon RD Home
Authorities were still investigating today the shotgun wounding of area farm couple and the cause of a fire that killed seven of their 13 children.
The parents and six older children escaped the flames that destroyed their log houser in a remote hillside section of Jordan ' Township (Herndon RD) Satueday night.
Dead in the fire were Cindy L. Bornder eight; Jerry A. seven; Stephen R., six; Roger J., five: John W. four; Ruby M., three, and Dennis, one.
State Trooper John Sherosick, a fire marshal attached to Troop F, Pennsylvania State, Police Headquarters at Montoursville, would say only that it was a "mysterious fire." However, the tone of other investigators gave indication that they were on the verge today of clearing up some of the mystery surrounding the tragedy. The possibility of an arrest being imminent was hinted.
Tho father Paul G. Bordner, 38, said he did not know the source of the shotgun blast, only "that it was a shotgun." He said he kept a number of guns in the house.
"The woman (his wife) said she saw the blast," Bordner said, "but we don't know who fired it."
Bordner's wife, Mary, 39, and six children are patients in Community Hospital, Sunbury.
A shotgun, believed to have been used in the shooting, has been found.
Dr. Henry F. Ulrich, Northumberland County cornoner, said today that an inquest is likely but that arrangements are pending further investigation. The coroner said he planned to con fer later today with Tpr. Sherosick.
Can of Gasoline Factor
The tragedy and mysterious circumstances surrounding it has shocked the Lower Northumberland County sector to the point that many residents who know the Bordner family are reluctant to discuss it.
Conflicting statements by mem bers of the Bordner family have added to the mystery. A particularly mysterious aspect of the fire centers around a container which the mother told Dr. Ulrich again this morning at Community Hospital, Surtbury, was believed to have contained water. Instead, it apparently contained gasoline and when it was thrown on the fire it caused the flames to spread. The woman told the coroner that her husband emptied the container on the flames.
Harold Bordner, 17, the oldest of the children was reported in critical condition at the hospital with first, second, and third degree burns of the back, both arms, face and head.
The other. Bordner children hospitalized with burns and other injuries are: Shirley, nine, first and, second degree burns of both hands; Cathy, 10, first and second degree burns of the right thigh and leg, and contusion of the left shoulder sustained when she jumped out of a second story window; Virginia, 12, first, second, and third degree burns of both shoulders, neck, arms and hands and an injury to the right foot suffered when she too jumped through a window; Kenneth, 14, singed hair; and Marlene, 15, first, second and third degree burns of the face both hands, arms and back.
All of the children except Harold were reported in fair condition today.
Two ambulances removed Mr. and Mrs. Bordner and their six surviving children to Sunbury Community. Hospital.
Mrs. Bordner, with a shotgun wound on the left side of the abdomen which tore holes in her liver and spleen obviously was the most seriously injured. Her condition waslisted a poor today. Her son Harold had the appearance of havinf been charred. Paul Bordner. the husband and father, was suffering only from six pellet wounds of the right arm. The children admitted to the hospital had a variety of injuries, mostly as a result of having leaped from the second floor of their burning home to the ground to escape the flames.
Before being taken to the operating room, Mrs. Bordner asked that she be permitted to make a statement to state police, the coroner and his deputy. She said that she had to bed at 7:30 Saturday evening and that her husband retired about an hour later.
She estimated that it about 10:30 when she opened her eyes and saw the flash a gun fired by a strange man. Her son, Harold, asleep on couch on the first floor, heard the shot and called out that house was afire, she added, then he started for the stairway to arouse the children on the second floor. She and son then noticed, she said, a five gallon can, assumed to contain water, was adjacent the stairway. As the contents were thrown on the flames the quickened and spread. It was apparent the contents were gasoline, she said. Harold was able to save five of his brothers and sisters.
Doctors S. L. Savidge George A. Deitrick Jr. of hospital staff performed surgery on the woman over a period of more than three hours. Her husband was treated for his minor wounds and discharged.
As pointed out one of mysteries of the tragedy and the the container supposedly filled with water but which apparently contained gasoline. Two of the Bordner sisters, during ambulance trip to the hospital, were quoted as discussing the container which they had seen outside the house Saturday.
The shotgun used in the shooting, found about 10 or 15 north of the burned home, was identified as belonging to Paul Bordner. It contained an exploded single band shell. The barrels of five or six guns, tbeir stocks burned off, were found in the ruins of the house.
Mrs. Bordner was in a state of extreme .shock when she made her statement to police seemed confused about the children who perished in the fire. She seemed to want to make it clear that her husband was not blame. Bordner indicated that in the excitement caused by the fire he had not pursued the mysterious stranger who fired the shot. In his first statement to police he had mentioned nothing about the container of gasoline but in later questioning told of its presence near the stairway.
Seek Fire Cause
Troopers John Nodich and James Timko, attached to the Shamokin state police substation are assisting Sherosick in the police end of the investigation.
They are seeking the cause of the fire in the old two-story, six-room log house located about two miles from Urban and 15 miles south of Sunbury.
Tpr. Sherosick said the shotgun which was found laying in the open near the house was a 12-gauge single shot weapon, which he said had been fired recently. The weapon was sent to the state police crime labor atory technicians in Harrisburg to be examined. An investigator said this morning that Mr. Bordner had not yet been asked to identify the gun. Among tests to be made is one for finger prints.
According to Sherosick, Mr and Mrs. Bordner said they were sleeping in a first floor bedroom when between 10 and 10:30 o'clock they were aroused by a shotgun blast. The oldest son, Harold, was sleeping on a couch in the nearby living room and the baby was in a crib near the stove. The 11 other children were in bedrooms on the second floor of the house.
Sherosick said he didn't know if there was a door to the bed room occupied by the parents. Bordner said he didn't hear any foot steps nor any other sounds of anyone entering the bedroom. The officer said that as far as can be determined only one shot was heard.
"I ran out into the living room and I saw the fire, Bordner said. "My oldest boy, Harold, was yelling, "'The house is on fire.' I tried to run up the stairs but it was ablaze. Har old ran up the stairs, but was unable to do anything. He jumped out the back window.
"I ran around the back of he house and tried to get in of the the ' teet exploded she to by of in in a back window but it was late." Police said a stepladder was used to try and enter burning house from the floor.
Bordner said he helped wife, who was able to walk, of the house.
Police were told the started around the stairway leading from the living to the upstairs. Harold and father reportedly called to younger children to through the windows.
The house was built on a slope in a wooded area. The slope of the land placed the windows closer to ground in the rear of the from where the children jumped.
Rescue Thwarted
Bordner said that when efforts to save the other children were thwarted, jumped into an automobile drove two miles into Urban, nearest community, to summon help. He went to a hotel in Urban where an ambulance and firemen were called. The said he took his wife and viving children in another and were met by an ambulance.
"The house was all up when we left," Bordner.
The volunteer fire company in Herndon responded to a call at about 11 p.m., but the house was already engulfed in flames when they arrived. All could do was pour water on blaze.
An Americus Ambulance from Sunbury took two of the surviv ing children to the hospital. The others were transported in a Lower Mahanoy Ambulance Service vehicle.
The house collapsed into basement and firemen were able to search 'the debris it cooled Sunday when the bodies of the children were found.
Dr. Ulrich, coroner and Ernest E. Korten, his deputy, took personal charge of the search in the smoldering ruins for bodies of the seven children perished. Only the rib cage pelvic sections were found, the first at about 9:20 Sunday morning and the last, that of baby who had been asleep the first floor, around 11:30. They were on the average three or four feet apart. It was im possible to positively identify any of them, even as to sex.
It was apparent, however, that all had suffocated rather than burned to death, also that the bodies of the six children on the second floor had dropped to the first floor and then into the cellar as flames leveled the house to the ground. It appeared that all had been in the rear second floor bedroom. Two concrete blocks in the chimney were all that remained above ground. State police took photographs of the children's remains.
Dr. Ulrich said he arrived at the scene at 3 a.m. and went home at 5:30 and then return ed at 8 a. m. and stayed until the last body was removed. Volunteer firemen and state police assisted the coroner and his deputy in the gruesome task.
Bordner said he kept about six guns in the house. Asked who might have triggered the weapon, he said: "It's beyond me. All I know Is it was a shotgun." His next to oldest son, Kenneth, said there was a shot and he heard someone running outside.
Somewhat puzzling was the statement of the oldest son, Harold, who told a newsman he heard the shot, then "Pop came up from the cellar. . . ." The same youth was quoted as telling an ambulance driver that almost simultaneously the shot sounded and the house broke out into flames.
The children who survived were believed to all have been asleep in one of the three second-story rooms. The old house had been heated by a coal-fired furnace in the basement.
Tpr. Sherosick indicated that he planned to interview the surviving children and the mother later today if their conditions allowed.
Bordner, who is employed by a cement block contractor in Dalmatia, lived with his family in the house located along a hillside on the road between Mandata and Urban.
Harold Bordner is a former student at Mahanoy Joint High School.
Paul D. and Mary Goldie Rebecca Herb Bordner and their six hospitalized children are the sole survivors pf the tragedy.
Funeral services for the seven children will be held Tues day at 2 p.m. from the Rothermel funeral home, Herndon, with burial in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Rev. Gene Follis, pastor of Grace Community Church, Mandata, will officiate. There will be no visitation.
The Daily Item (Sunbury, Pennsylvania), 22 Nov 1965, Mon, Pages 1, 6.
The remains of the seven children were buried in a single casket.3,4 - Seventeen year-old Harold Bordner, who was severley burned in the fire, verbally admitted that he shot his mother and set the fire that killed 7 of his siblings. The action was attributed to heavy financial pressures on Harold as a result of an automobile accident 4 weeks earlier, and was apparently part of a plan to kill his parents and obtain their insurance coverage. Harold was in the hospital at the time of the confession and apparently was under sedation.
Harold was subsequently charged with arson, murder, and assault with intent to kill. He was not released from the hospital until April, 1966, whereupon he was taken to prison to await a preliminary hearing on the charges.
When he was finally arraigned in April, 1966, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. Questions about the admissibilty of numerous confessions he made while in the hospital eventually went to the PA Supreme Court, which ruled that only one of the 6 confessions could be admitted at his trial, which eventually began in March, 1969. After much conflicting testimony was offered, a jury acquitted Harold of all charges. An editorial in the Sunbury Daily Item noted that teh police investigation of teh tragedy raised more questions than it answered, because
"obtaining an admission of guilt from a 17-year-old boy in unbearable pain despite heavy medication was construed as the sole objective of law enforcement officers! This pat "solution" of the horrendous crime was achieved in less than three days of investigation.
"The results of that brief and simple search for facts have been rejected by a jury for the reason that much which did not meet the eyes of the investigators was bared by reputable, disinterested witnesses. . . ."5,6,7,8,9,10 - Mary Goldie Rebecca Herb died on 26 June 2008, Hegins, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 82.1
