    Updegrave rites
    Funeral services for Mary E. Updegrave, 78, of 1303 West Maple St., Valley View, who died Monday at Pottsville Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View.
    The Rev. Mark Woodring will officiate. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Gratz.
    There will be no viewing Wednesday evening.
    Born in Gratz, Feb. 8, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie Umholtz Williard.
    She was retired from the former Valley View Manufacturing Company.
    Her husband, Russell, died in 1990.
    Surviving are a son, Harold Updegrave, Valley View; two daughters, Jeannette Smith, Valley View, and Ruth Flannery, Hegins; a sister, Lillian Stiely, Klingers-town; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

    Darlene Florence Masser, 78, of Klingerstown, passed away Friday, March 5, 2020 at her home.
    Darlene was born in Ashland, PA on June 3, 1942, a daughter of the late Miriam (Artman) Herring and Paul Herring.
    She is survived by her husband James Henry Masser.
    She was employed first as a dietician at the Friendly Nursing Home, then worked in home health care for 25 years and had last worked at Walmart until her retirement.
    She was a member of the Gratz VFW Diamond Jubilee Post 2385 and served with the Mahantongo Ambulance Association as an EMT for many years.
    She enjoyed gardening, arranging flowers, sewing, and ran a French Fry stand at the Paxinos Flea Market with her husband. She especially enjoyed spending time and laughing with her family.
    Darlene is survived by two daughters, Tami, wife of Stephen Wagner, of Ashland; Tonia Wolfgang and William Billus, of Ashland; a son,Troy, husband of Susan Klinger, of Pitman; grandchildren, Kenneth and Sarah Beury, Janessa Klinger, Cody and Kimber Wolfgang and Lauren and Sierra Wagner; four sisters, Karen Schreffler, of Pitman; Brenda, wife of Daniel Reed, of Ashland; Donna Wolfgang, of Ashland; Diane Grose, of Pitman; a brother, Rick, husband of Cindy Herring, of Hegins; three step-children, Penny Rissinger, Phillip Masser, and Angela Masser and their families.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter Kathy D.(Klinger) Beury who passed in 1986.
    Visitation will be held on Thursday March 11, 2021 from 10-11 at the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Ridge Road, Klingerstown with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM with Pastor Bob Cassell officiating Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.3

    Paul A. Herring, 46, lifelong resident and businessman of Pitman, died Monday at 1:15 p.m. in Shamokin General Hospital as the result of injuries received in an auto accident Sept 3.
    Mr. Herring was driving his walkin butcher truck between Gowen Gty and Helfenstein when the vehicle overturned. When he was pinned underneath it his left hand was amputated.
    Born in Pitman. Sept 21, 1917, he was the son of Clarence and Elizabeth Deitrich Herring, of Pitman.
    A member of St Paul's United Church of Christ Gowen City, be was owner and operator of Herring's Meat Market Pitman.
    He was a member of the East Cameron Township Hose Com pany, the Mah an tango Fire Co. of Pitman, the Independent Hose Co. of Shamokin, the ' Ranger Hose Co., of Girardville, the Nimrod Gun Club of West Cameron, the Mowry Rod and Gun Club of Mowry, and the Good Fellowship Club, of Ashland.
    Surviving in addition to his parents are his widow, the former Miriam Artman, of Pitman, six children, Darlene, wife of Bruce Klinger, and Karen, wife of Ronald Herb, both of Hegins RD2, and Brenda, Donna, Dianne, and Rickey, all at home; three grandchildren; and five sisters, Mrs. Ben Fertig and Mrs. Lamar Heyer, both of Lavelle; Mrs. Kenneth Wilde, of Ambler; Mrs. Leonard Maurer, of Coopersburg; and Mrs. Mark Masser, of Beury's Grove.
    Funeral services Thursday afternoon at St Paul's UCC, Gowen City. Interment in the adjoining parish cemetery. Rev, Thomas Rissinger of Gowen City will officiate.

    PITMAN -- Miriam O. Herring, 70, of Pitman RDI died Friday evening, July 7, 1989, in the Pottsville Hospital, where she had been a patient for five days.She had been in ill health for the past year.
    Born in Doutyville, Sept. 12, 1918, she was a daughter of the late George and Florence (Kenninger) Artman. She was preceded in death by her hus-! band, Paul A. Herring, in 1964.
    Mrs. Herring was a former employee of the Twin Valley Farmers Exchange, Hegins, and was last employed as a cook at the Friendly Nursing Home, Pitman, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St: Paul's United Church of Christ, Gowen City, and the Mahantongo Valley Senior Citizens, Pitman.
    She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Darlene Novitsky of Klingerstown, Mrs. Karen Schreffler of Lock Haven, Mrs. Glenda Reed and Mrs. Donna Wolfgang, both of Ashland RDI, and Mrs. Diane Grose of Pitman RDI. a son, Rickey of Hegins; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
    A granddaughter, Mrs. Kathy Berry, died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a sister.
    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Gowen City, by the Rev. Bonnie Dalious. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
    Visitors may call from 7 to 9 tonight in the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown RD1, and in the church after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
