Burial will be in St. Paul's (Erdley's) Lutheran Church Cemetery, Smalsh Barrick Road, Middleburg. There will be a reception at the Kreamer firehall, and friends and family are invited.

  • Newspaper obituary:
    Gerald B. Long, 89, Kreamer
KREAMER -- Gerald B. "Jim" Long, 89, went into eternity peacefully from his home near Kreamer on Tuesday evening, Nov. 11, 2014.
He was born in Snyder County, on Aug . 2, 1925, to William "Ernie" and Hetty G. Long (Bilger) Long. Jim grew up on the farms of two of his uncles. He acquired a lifelong work ethic from them.
When he was up for military service, Jim joined the Navy and served on a LST carrier in the Pacific Theater during World War II. At that time, he had a boxing "career" onboard ship. Once he was discharged, he continued boxing locally for a while.
Jim was married to Wanda M. Specht on May 1, 1948. Before she passed away in July, they marked the 66th anniversary of their marriage. They had four children.
He worked several jobs to support his young family. For seven years, he even worked out-of-state, coming home on weekends when the weather was good. Then, he was hired by ACF, Milton, to weld railroad cars. Jim retired from there at age 62. Being the hard worker that he was, when he was called to work part-time as a night watchman at Bingman and Son Lumber, Jim worked 19 more years.
After their children were grown, Jim and Wanda traveled to many states and a few foreign countries, especially Haiti. While on one "mission" trip to Haiti, he helped to build a house for a Haitian friend. For several years, Jim, his wife and her one sister took clothing and OTC supplies to poor people living in villages near that house in Haiti.
One thing Jim's family likes to recall is a habit he had when on vacations anywhere. He'd arrive at a town like Bozeman, Mont., for example, and he's say, I'll be back. Then, he'd be gone a couple of hours walking and scoping out this new territory.
Jim was mechanically inclined and did work on family cars up until repairs needed technicians to do them. He also was handy at carpentry. Once, he took apart an old barn and built a four-car garage.
For about four years, he was assistant scoutmaster for the Kreamer Boy Scout troops.
He was a kind and generous man who liked to joke a lot.
Jim leaves behind four children and their spouses, Beverly Rapp and husband Lew, Melanie Long, Rebecca Simpson and Anthony Long and wife Mary; 10 grandchildren, David Benfer, Wendy McDermott, Allis Womer, Palmer Simpson, Jen Zerbe, April Springs, Sarah Long, Naomi Shaffer, Jaimie Wha-ley and Grace Long; seven great-grandchildren, Amy, Hannah, Aiden, Sophia, Cedric, Ciera and Ronin; and one great-grandson, Eric.
One grandson, Marty Rapp, and one great-grandson, Zane, are deceased.
All of them only ever called him "Pop."
In addition, Jim leaves behind three sisters, Emma Metzger, Barbara Smith and husband Ron and Rosalie Wimer and husband Bill; five brothers, Earl Long, Carl Long and wife Jean, Ronnie Long and wife Frances, Barry Long and wife Bonnie and Galen Long and wife Beth; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Cook and Miriam Specht; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by one sister, Molly Long Heiser, and two brothers, Orvis Long and Paul Long.
The viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Hoke officiating.
Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 25 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631, both of Selinsgrove, in St. Paul's (Erd-ley's) Lutheran Church Cemetery, Smalsh Barrick Road. A reception for family and friends will follow.
Instead of sending floral arrangements, people are asked to donate the amount they would have spent to the American Red Cross. Thank you. We appreciate it.
The family also extends thanks to the SUN Home Health and Hospice agency and the Union-Snyder Agency on Aging for their help and guidance this past year.
