    SUNBURY MAN DROWNS IN LAKE
    John F. Shaffer, 32, of Burbury, lost his life by drowning in Po-Paddy Park Lake, Center County, last Wednesday afternoon, while on a duck hunting trip.
    According to advices, the accident occurred when Shaffer used a boat to recover a duck which he had shot. Some distance from shore the bottom of the boat gave way and Shaffer leaped into the water and started to swim to shore, but sank before reaching shallow water. Companions on shore were unable to reach him in time.
    The body was recovered several hours later by Lewistown firemen.
    Shaffer was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shaffer and had been a resident of Sunbury most of his life.
    He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Florence Harper, of Millersburg; his mother, Mrs. William Derr, Sunbury R. D. 2; two brothers, Glenn W. Shaffer, serving with the Navy "Seabees" in the Pacific and Paul Shaffer of the Marine Corps, Virginia; and one sister, Mrs. Paul Lahr, of Northumberland.
    Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon and interment was made in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.

    County Hunter Drowns In Lake
    John Franklin Shaffer, 32, Sunbury, a laboratory technician, was drowned late yesterday in a lake near a former CCC camp at Coburn, Center County, when his boat sank while he was retrieving a duck he had shot.
    Seven other men, including B.W. Woodley, also of Sunbury, stood on the lake shore, unable to rescue Shaffer who had heavy clothing on at the time.
    State troopers and firemen were summoned to the scene to search for the body.

    SUNBURY - Mrs. Loretta A. Derr, 80, a former resident of the Sunbury area, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday in the Danville State Hospital where she had been a patient since March 9.
    Before being admitted to the hospital she lived with a daughter in Levittown.
    Mrs. Derr was a member of the Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church of Sunbury.
    Born in Mount Carmel, Oct. 16, 1892, she was a daughter of the late Jonathan and Ida Boyer Wert. Her first husband, John F. Shaffer died in 1919. In 1920 she married William B. Derr, who survives.
    In addition to her husband, she is survived by the following children, Mrs. Ida A. Lahr and Mrs. Helen G. Zerbe both of Northumberland RD1, Paul B. Shaffer of Northumberland, Glenn W. Shaffer of Sunbury, Mrs. Mary E. Jones of Hollins, Ala., the Rev. William B. Derr Jr. of Staunton, Va., George R. Derr of Danville RD6, Mrs. Ruth V. Jenkens of Park City, Ill., Roy E. Derr of Laurel, Md., Mrs. Hazel D. Wynn and Calvin R. Derr, both of Levittown and Robert A. Derr of Willingboro.
    Also, one stepdaughter, Mrs. Rachel L. Seipel of Sunbury; 42 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; two step-great-grand- step-grand- and children and one step greatgrate- grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Tyson of Harrisburg and Mrs. Ruth Forry of Linglestown. One son, John, died before her.
    The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday from the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, Sunbury. The Rev. Leroy F. Heller will officiate. Burial will be made in the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
    Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening.
