    Born in Hegins, Feb. 14, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Cletus and Maude Stutzman Deitrich.
    She was retired from Hegins Manufacturing Co.
    She was a member of St John's United Methodist Church, Hegins.
    Her husband, Ray, died in 1980.
    Surviving are two sons, Donald, Tower City, and Larry, RD1 Hegins; two sisters, Verona Clark, Hegins, and Helen Hess, Ephrata; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mark Woodring, Hegins, will officiate. There will be no viewing tonight. Interment will be in St John's Cemetery, Hegins. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

    Helen I. Hess, 90, of Ephrata, entered into rest at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center in Narvon Saturday, March 19, 2011.
    She was bom in Hegins, a daughter of the late Cletus C. and Maude I. Stutzman Deitrich. She was the wife of Samuel J. Hess, to whom she shared 69 years of marriage.
    Helen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. During her working years she worked as a hairdresser at Helen's Beauty Shop. She also enjoyed camping.
    Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter Linda J., wife of Barry Zimmerman, of Brownstown; four grandchildren: Randy Maurer, Ronald Maurer, Kristie Lawrence and Todd Zimmerman; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter. Geraldine Maurer; and four sisters: Martha Herner, Annie Schnupp, Mabel Williamson and Verona Clark. Funeral services were held at Stradling Funeral Home March 23 with the Rev. Bruce Willier and Pastor Barry S. Zimmerman officiating. Interment followed in the Lincoln Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Helen I. Hess Honor Guard.

    Services for Ray Norman Herner, 72, of the Hegins area, who died Wednesday evening at Good Samaritan Hospital, will be held Saturday morning from St. John's United Methodist Church, Hegins. The Rev. Lee R. Otto will officiate and interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hegins. Arthur R. Buffington Funeral Home, Valley View, has charge of arrangements.
    Mr. Herner was born in Hegins Township, Dec. 2, 1907, a son of the late Jacob and Sophie Mattern Herner. Before becoming ill in 1975 he had been employed as a machinist at Hegins Manufacturing Co. for many years.

    He was a retired oil burner technician from Tower Sales, with over 34 years of service. He had also been a coal miner.
    He was of the Protestant faith.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Terri Herner.
    Surviving are his wife, Erma R. "Doll" Bender Herner, to whom he was married for 52 years; two sons, Donald R. Jr. and his wife, Sharyn, Tower City, and Dal E. and his wife, Desirae, Lykens; a brother, Larry, Hegins; five grandchildren, Donald, Kimberly, Nikkii, Danny and Seth.

    Larry Lamar Herner, 77, of 10 Herner Lane, Hegins, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019, surrounded by his family.
    He was born on Nov. 27, 1941, in Hegins, a son of the late Ray and Martha Deitrich Herner.
    Larry attended the former Hegins Township High School.
    Following high school, he had worked in several area coal mines, later he owned and operated a coal delivery and excavating business.
    He was a former member of St. John’s Methodist Church, Hegins.
    He was also a member of Valley Lodge 797 F&AM and the Grand Holy Royal Arch Chapter, Harrisburg.
    Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Herner Sr.
    He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, to whom he was married for 51 years. Larry is also survived by two sons, Darryl and wife, Danni-Marie Herner, of Hegins, and Kevin Herner, of Hegins; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Kay-Lee Herner.
    A Celebration of Life with Masonic services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the family homestead at 2 Herner Lane, Hegins, with the Rev. Michael Klahr, pas- tor of Friedens UCC, Hegins, officiating. It will be a casual gathering with a cookout fol- lowing the service, if you like, a covered dish of any kind would be greatly appreciated but not required!
