West Geary Strohecker, 74, of 14 West Main Street, Myerstown, a former coal dealer of this city and a member of the road cindering crew of the State Highway Department, was fatally injured about 7:45 o'clock last evening on the Benjamin Franklin Highway, east of Lebanon, near Avon, when he was struck by a car operated by William J. Reagan, 19, of 3 Kimber Street, New Philadelphia, Pa.
The accident, one of a series of crashes in the area last evening, was attributed to storm conditions that created many difficulties tor motorists, and combining flying snow and treacherous highways.
According to police and hospital reports, Strohecker was with a crew of highway workers, cindering spots on the highway as a safety precaution for motorists, and had just completed his particular job, with the intention of taking up a position as highway flagman, when he was struck by the Reagan car. From what could be learned, Strohecker was in the center of the highway at the time, and the lantern he was carrying was not lit when the accident occurred.
He suffered severe cerebral concussion, shock and multiple fractures of both legs, and expired in the Good Samaritan Hospital's emergency room ten minutes after he was brought into the hospital by Reagan. Coroner W.H. Brubaker stated today that he has not yet determined whether or not to hold an inquest. He stated that Reagan was released on his own recognisance, pending further developments hinging upon a complete investigation by the local stale police. Privates John B, Oberholtter and Peter P. Salus are working on the case for the state police.
According to other members of the work crew, the cinder truck had moved on from the spot where they had Just completed their work, and none was aware that Strohecker was on the road without a signal light burning. Reagan told police that he came upon the man too suddenly to avoid the accident and he was unable to swerve his car away tn time to prevent his car from striking the flagman. Strohecker was In the employ of the State highway de partment for about five years.
Mr. Strohecker is survived by his wife, the former Emma J, Stiely; a son. Clarence H. Strohecker, of Richland; and three daughters as follows: Bertha, wife of Charles Brocious, Cortland, N. Y; Mrs. Hannah Krelder, Quentin; and Alice, wife of Walter Hartz, Lebanon.
