  • Newspaper obituary:
10-Year Old Youth Hit By Car, Fatally Injured
David Blauch Is Struck While Riding On Bike
Dies In Good Samaritan Hospital Fifteen Minutes Later — County Boy Is Third Bike Rider Killed This Year
David James Blauch, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd E. Blauch, Annville Route 1, died in Good Samaritan Hospital at 9:45 last night, 15 minutes after he was admitted with a fractured skull received when the bicycle which he was riding was struck by an automobile on the Annville-Indiantown Gap road in front of his home.
The driver of the car was George G. Deichert, 42, of 207 E. Maple St., Cleona, according to Pfc. Joseph V. Kelly of the Annville substation of the State Police.
It was the third fatality of the year in which a bicyclist was involved that State Police at Annville reported, and the 15th motor vehicle traffic fatality in Lebanon County so far in 1953.
Dr. John L. Groh, Lebanon County coroner, said that death resulted from a fractured skull and that no inquest would be held unless District Attorney William H. Egli should order one. Egli said this morning that he had not yet conferred with Pfc. Kelly because of a court session which both were attending, but would do so this afternoon.
Pfc. Kelly said that the bicycle on which the boy was riding carried no light and that he found no evidence of a light on the bicycle nor any evidence of a light at the scene.
He said that the accident occurred about four miles north of Annville and that the boy's head crashed through the windshield of the car by the impact.
Deichert said he did not see the youth drive out of the side road in front of his home along the Annville-Indiantown Gap road until the moment of the collision.
Neither Deichert nor his wife, who was seated on the right side of the front seat, was injured.
Officials at Good Samaritan Hospital said the youth was unconscious when brought there in the ambulance of the Union Hose Company, Annville. He did not regain consciousness prior to his death.
Physicians said he suffered a hole in the roof of his mouth that possibly could have been caused when he was struck by a handlebar of the bicycle. In addition he also had lacerations and abrasions of the face. Police said one side of the handlebar was twisted.
While Trooper Kelly said the bicycle operated by the youth was without a light, the child's father said a flashlight was attached to the bicycle.
Police said the boy was entering unto highway Route 934 from the right side of the southbound car, and apparently intended to cross the highway to the Carl Tice service station opposite his home. At the time Deichert was returning home from a visit with friends in the Indiantown Gap area.
Trooper Kelly said the boy's view of oncoming traffic was obstructed by a 10 to 12 foot embankment along the side road where it enters Route 934. The highway at this point was described by police as fairly level.
The police investigation showed the bicycle was struck by the right front fender of the car. According to the report, Deichert halted his car about 80 feet from the point of impact.
At the time of the tragedy, the boy's father, a mechanic employed by the Jonah Donmoyer trucking firm, was at work.
After the accident, Deichert was released following questioning at the scene by State Police, and it was not until some time later that he was informed the youth had died.
A native and life-long resident of the Annville R. D. 1 area, young Blauch is the son of Lloyd E. and Ellen Shirk Blauch. He attended the fifth grade of the Laurel Grove school and Sunday School of the Bellegrove Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by six brothers and sisters: Glen, 18; Marion, 16; Ruth, 14; Lloyd Jr., 12; Barbara, 8; and Susan, 3. Also surviving are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Shirk of Jonestown R.D. 1; and Harrison Blauch of Annville R.D. 2, paternal grandfather.
