  • Newspaper obituary:
Adolph, Eileen Enders, 95, the beloved matriarch of our family has passed out of our lives and onto the next great adventure. She passed away peacefully on September 19, 2016.
Eileen was born November 2, 1920, the first child of Lester and Hattie Enders. She belonged to the illustrious Enders family which originated in Germany and now stretches all over the globe. She loved attending the annual family reunion in Enders, Pennsylvania. Her final attendance was in 2012 when she had the most descendants present.
She attended a one room schoolhouse for many years before graduating from Halifax High School in 1938. She then struck out on her own, graduating from Central Pennsylvania Business School before moving to Washington, D.C. during World War II. She worked in the safety section for the Department of Defense. It was there that the most important chance meeting of her life would take place.
Army Sergeant George Adolph walked into a small café where she was relaxing. He was expecting to meet a date, but the woman never showed up. Seeing Eileen sitting there, he inquired if she might like to go out. Their love began there, and never waned for the over sixty years that they spent together on this earth. They were married September 15, 1944.
After the war, the young couple was determined to have a place of their own. They settled near Crandall, Indiana, at an eighty-six acre farm they named Four Winds. Eileen was a hands-on woman and worked the farm while raising three adorable red-headed girls. She took on more responsibility when George took a job near Chicago which kept him away from the farm through the week. Eileen often said that all that hard work was her secret to a long life.
Eileen saved every letter that was ever mailed to her and wrote in her journal almost every day. She kept family scrapbooks and photo albums up to date and was also an insatiable reader. Eileen was a Precinct Committee volunteer who registered voters in their homes. She worked the polls when tallies were made by hand. She took pride in voting in every election and encouraged her family to do the same. She also worked many years in the Harrison County Assessor's office. Eileen had a strong faith and was a member of Crandall United Methodist Church for decades. She also served in the United Methodist Women's group.
After her husband's death, she decided to move closer to family and bought a small home near Corydon. After over sixty years on a large farm she loved having close neighbors. She especially loved watching the free-range chickens next door.
Elieen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George and her sister, Evie Urich.
She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Jackson (Ernie), Leta Kranbuhl (Tim) and Georgeen Thompson (Bob). She is also survived by her siblings in Pennsylvania: Paul Enders, Bob Enders (Judy), and Myra Hoffman. She had seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with one on the way. She adored her family and never missed sending a birthday card.
Georgeen and Bob thank the many neighbors who watched over Eileen during the past years. We thank those in the cluster churches that said prayers for her. Thank you to the caregivers, nurses, and doctors that took such gentle care of her.
She has lived a long life and a good life, and we are the better for having known her. We will miss her dearly. After a quiet life of hard work and faith, she insisted upon a "lively" celebration of her life, and we will try to make it so. Arrangements are as follows: Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2016 at Swarens Funeral Home, 1405 Hwy 64 NW, Ramsey, IN with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery, Crandall, IN. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
