Doyle F. Deppen
October 15, 1942 - June 9, 2026
ELIZABETHVILLE - Doyle Forrest Deppen, 83, of North Street, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at his home. He was the eldest son of the late Charles H. and Arlene S. Deppen of Pillow. Born in Red Cross, PA on October 15, 1942, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine M. "Gerri" Deppen, 79, two daughters; Deanna M. Deppen, 57, and Denise M. Knisely, 59, and her husband Thomas F. Knisely, 58, all of Roanoke, Virginia, and two beloved grandchildren always in his thoughts; Samuel C. Knisely, 27, of Arlington, VA, and Brooke A. Knisely, 24, of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by three brothers Rodney Deppen and wife Jean, of Pillow, Dean Deppen and wife Jane, of Elizabethville, and Stephen Deppen and wife Candy of Valley View. Additional close family include; "Gerri's brother", as he always said, brother-in-law Eric B. Clough, 64, of Elizabethville, and grandson at heart Jordan T. Knisely and wife Jessica A. Knisely, of Millersburg and their children Ava and Aaron.
At age 19, Doyle drove his first new car, a 1961 Chevy Impala SS, to pick up Gerri for their first date. He later taught her to drive in that car, and he was a Chevy owner his entire life. In 1961 he and a group of family and friends bought a camp and founded "The Pillow Rod & Gun Club" in Glen Union, PA in Clinton County. He was the last surviving original founding member of the camp. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in the early Vietnam era and was stationed in Alaska, "of all places", he often said. After the Army he became a steel worker for Bethlehem Steel in Steelton, PA and retired after 37 years. He was proud to be a steel worker and believed in supporting America jobs.
Doyle was a Legionnaire at the American Legion John Lloyd Post 404, Elizabethville, for many years prior and eventually led the post as Commander for over 20 years. He dedicated his early term to returning financial health to the post and during his tenure he was proud to oversee the construction and dedication of the post's memorial wall for local armed service members fallen in the line of duty. He was also honored as Commander to swear in his son-in-law as a Legionnaire, Thomas F. Knisely, Major, United States Army, now retired.
Many hobbies and activities interested Doyle throughout his life; golfing, playing euchre and poker, his daily crossword puzzle, and in recent years hawk and eagle watching with his buddy DP. He was also an avid American coin collector and loved American history. Well known in Upper Dauphin County, he was a member and supporter of the many veteran's and social clubs in the area.
Throughout his life Doyle made countless friends and acquaintances who he always greeted with a pleasant demeanor. He will be missed dearly. His wishes were for no funeral but that a Celebration of Life will be held at the Elizabethville Legion on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 5, 2026. Details will be provided as the date approaches. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Legion Post 404, P.O. Box 15, Elizabethville, PA 17023.
Rest in Peace, dear friend.
