Adams married Carol Foye Russell on 6 July 1985, New London, New London County, CT.7,3 Gene R. Adams died on 25 December 2021, New London, CT, at age 86.3
Newspaper obituary:
Gene Adams
New London -- Dr. Gene R. Adams of New London passed away on Christmas Day at age 86, with his wife, Carol, at his side. He bravely fought a three-year battle with leukemia, hanging on with valor in the final days, knowing that many of his children and grandchildren would be arriving soon to hold his hand one last time. He was a man of great accomplishment, but what mattered most in his life were his wife, family and friends.
Gene was a self-made man coming from humble beginnings. He was born in Klingerstown, Pa. (Pennsylvania Dutch country). He never met his mother, Pauline, who died shortly after childbirth. His father, Homer, worked in the coal mines and died of black lung disease when Gene was 13.
Pauline's sister Violet and her husband, Joe [Stehr], provided Gene with a loving and supportive upbringing. Gene proved to be a top scholar and athlete, excelling in basket ball. He majored in chemistry, earning his undergraduate degree from Lebanon Valley College in just three years. Then he was off to medical school at Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he earned an M.D. at the young age of 24. He trained in Harrisburg, before serving as a U.S. Air Force pediatrician in Wiesbaden, Germany. The rest of his career was spent serving the people of New London as a renowned and beloved pediatrician. In addition to his private practice, he served as chief of pediatrics at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. A skilled diagnostician, he played a central role in the discovery of a treatment for Lyme Disease in children.
Gene and his first wife, Frances Gorski Adams, raised five children: Karen, Kim, Kathy, Jeff and Jennifer. They lovingly remember him as a dad who was always there for them and ready to create the next adventure.
In 1985, Gene married Carol Foye Russell, thus welcoming daughters Christine and Holly into the expanding family. Together, Gene and Carol have 14 grandchildren and one great grandson. They were his greatest treasures.
Gene's hardest loss was the passing of his son Jeff. Jeff was devoted to his father, following him to Jefferson University Medical School. They were inseparable friends with a shared passion for golf. Gene was a longtime member at Great Neck Country Club. Father and son played in golf tournaments across the country, winning many of them. They had a blast together, truly best buddies. Near the end of his life, he was still seen on the links.
Gene asked that special thanks be extended to Dr. Ben- jamin Newton of the Smilow Cancer Hospital. The good doctor cared for Gene and extended his days on earth with his loving family. A private ceremony was held Dec. 30, attended by all of extended family.
In lieu of flowers, Gene wished that donations might be made to the Cactus Jack Foundation, a local charity that helps support families in need.
