SCHLESWIG, Iowa - Robert B. Lyon, 78, of Schleswig died Tuesday, April 11, 1989, at his winter home in Fulton, Texas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with the Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiating. Burial will be in the Morgan Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday in Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.
Mr. Lyon was born July 30, 1910, in Chicago. He moved to Sumner with his family as an infant. They later moved to Dike and in 1919 moved to Waterloo. In 1923 they moved to Schleswig. He graduated from Schleswig High School in 1929 and attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Iowa). He married Marie O'Meara July 30, 1936. He was associated with his father in the operation of the Schleswig Leader until his father's death in 1945 at which time he became the owner and publisher. He was also owner and publisher of the Kiron Weekly News. He purchased the Mapleton Press in 1959 and the Ute Independent in 1961. He retired in 1975 and the couple spent the winters in Fulton.
Mr. Lyon was secretary of the board of directors of Schleswig Sausage during the organization and starting of the meat processing plant. He was a member of the Schleswig Fire Department for 20 years, a Boy Scout troop leader, and served on the Schleswig school board. He was a member of Rotary Club and the Maple Heights Retirement Housing board in Mapleton.
He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi National Journalism Fraternity, Des Moines SDX Chapter. A member and past president of the Iowa Press Association, he was awarded the Master Editor-Publisher Award in 1981. He also served in various offices of the Interstate Editorial Association.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas of Schleswig and Edward of Mapleton; a daughter, Mrs. Phil (Sandy) Rickert of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Dale (Lila) Neely of Castle Rock, Wash.

Dale E Neely 80 of Castle Rock died Oct 22 1998 at St John Medical Center.
He was born Oct 31 1917 in Cherryvale Kan to Herman U and Mary (Grayson) Neely and graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1935. In 1937 he moved to Vancouver where he worked as a window dresser for Montgomery Ward. He enlisted in the Navy in February 1942, serving on the battleship USS Nevada.
After his discharge in October 1945 he moved to Kelso where he worked for an uncle in a dry-cleaning shop. On May 14, 1948, he and Lila Louise Lyon were married. On May 1 1950 he bought Castle Rock Dry Cleaners and moved to Castle Rock He retired in 1982.
Mr Neely was a life member and past exalted ruler of the Kelso Elks, of which he was also a past trustee He was a 51-year member of the Castle Rock American Legion, Glen Hoyer Post 175, and a member of the Castle Rock United Methodist Church.
He loved to travel, work in his yard, shop for antiques, and go to Elks functions
Survivors include his wife Lila at home; three sons, Russell E. Neely of Kelso, Duane A. Neely of Atlanta, Ga., and Mark S. Neely of Spokane; and five grandchildren He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hubbard Funeral Home in Castle Rock with the Rev. Murray Hyde officiating. Concluding ceremonies and interment will follow at Whittle-Hubbard Cemetery conducted by the Castle Rock American Legion Glen Hoyer Post 175.
Viewing hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and before the service time Monday at the funeral home.
