Howard Homer Erdman married Bessie Margaret Williams, daughter of Alexander S. Williams and Amanda Matilda Kline, on 5 May 1923, St. Michael's Church, Klingerstown, Schuylkill County, PA.2,3 Howard Homer Erdman died on 23 December 1925, Uniontown (Pillow), Dauphin County, PA, at age 37; The cause of death as determined by a coroner's inquest was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. One newspaper reported:
Fox Hunter Found Dead On Mountain Near Pillow
"TAKES OWN LIFE," DECISION AT CORONER'S INQUEST, WEDNESDAY
Last Monday morning, Howard Erdman, aged about 35, who resides near Hepler, Schuylkill County, left the home of a relative, unaccompanied, for a fox hunting trip on the mountain near Pillow. When he failed to return in a reasonable time, alarm was felt and a searching party was organized.
Nine hours after Erdman had left the house, the searching party came upon his body a half a mile distant from the house. The body was found in underbrush, and a double-barrel shot gun nearbv with one barrel discharged. It was apparent that Erdman had received the full effect of the discharge of the weapon and it was first thought that the gun was accidentally discharged in the underbrush. The shot struck the man full in the head.
Had Been In Ill Health
Erdman had gone to the home of a relative, Alexander Williams, near Pillow to spend the Christmas holidays and before leaving the house on Monday had complained of feeling ill. It is said that, the man had been in bad health for quite some time and it is thought this fact lead him to take this action. Having left the house at nine o'clock in the morning, his body was found at 6.30 the same evening.
E. W. Dockey, Justice of the Peace, Pillow, four miles from the scene of the fatality was notified and the body was placed in charge of a local undertaker for burial.
Coroner's Inquest Decides On Suicide
On Wednesday afternoon at the inquest, the Coroner's Jury decided that Erdman had taken his own life. Because of the fact that the shotgun was lying by the man's side, Coroner Kreider announced that the jury reached the decision of suicide The investigations were made by Justice of the Peace, Elmer W. Dockey of Pillow and Coroner Kreider of Harrisburg.
Funeral Services Held Saturday.
Funeral services were held from the Williams home, Saturday after noon, December 26th and interment was made in the cemetery of St. Michaels Lutheran Church at Klingerstown, the Rev.
