Newspaper obituary:
FIND BODY OF MAN, DEAD FOR WEEK IN AUTO
Harlan H. Klock, 46, Herndon R.D, Missing Since April 17, Suicide By Carbon Monoxide Fumes, Coroner Rules [ ]
Harlan H. Klock, 46, of Herndon R. D., missing from his home between Red Cross and Mandata in Jackson Township, since Thursday, April 17, was found dead in his automobile about a mile from his home on an unused logging road at 6 p. m. Friday. He had committed suicide, according to Dr. Sidney, Kallaway, county coroner, and Shamokin state police, and had evidently been dead for at least a week.
He was found by his wife. Mrs, Beulah T. Klock, her son, James, 16, and a neighbor, William Rebuck, who were scouring the area when Klock failed to appear at his home over such a long period of time. He was sitting in the right side of the seat in his coupe, with his head leaning back and his mouth about six inches from the nozzle of a flexible conduit pipe. They could not get into the car as the doors were locked and the windows were closed.
A call was sent to the Shamokin state police and Officer Al Baceski and C. P. Lewis responded accompanied by Dr. Kallaway. A door of the car was broken open and the ignition switch was on, the battery was dead and the gas tank was empty.
It was found that Klock had run the pipe from the exhaust through the trunk at the back of the car, punched a hole through the partition and brought the pipe up to the front seat.
Klock had not returned to his home, which is just off Route 125 last Thursday night, but his family did not think much about it, as he was known to stay away from home for periods at a time. When he still did not appear Friday his wife and son went looking for him in the surrounding area accompanied by Rebuck.
The car was found parked on the abandoned logging road in a shady place not more than a mile from the man's home. He was employed as a greaser on a shovel for the Dick Construction Company engaged in coal stripping in the Trevorton area.
He was born January 21, 1901, in the Herndon area, and is survived by his wife, Beulah Trautman Klock; the following children, James C. and Spencer S., at home; Mrs. William Drumheller, Rebuck; Mrs. Marlin Harris, of Dornsife R. D; Mrs. Charles Russell, Mandata; Mrs. Harvey Snyder, Sunbury; Mrs. Charles Phillips, Shamokin R. D; Hilda M. and Emma D., at home; one grandchild: a brother, William Klock, of Kosoma, Okla., and two sisters, Mrs. Royal Kohl, Bethlehem, and Mrs. Richard Weist, Sacramento, Pa.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p. m. from the Rothermel Funeral Home, Herndon, with services to be continued at the Himmel's Lutheran and Reformed Church and interment in Himmel's cemetery. Rev. Jacob M. Singer, Reformed pastor of Herndon, will officiate.
