Richard Straub, 57; owned a Haverford dry cleaners
    By Bill Price
    INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Richard "Dick" Straub, 57, of Havertown, who owned and operated a dry-cleaning business and was chairman of the Haverford Township Park and Recreation Board, died Saturday at Temple University Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
A longtime member and two-time chairman of the park and recreation board, Mr. Straub is credited with getting citizens involved in the revitalization of the township's neighborhood parks over the last nine years.
In 1985, as chairman of the board, he was instrumental in establishing the Neighborhood Improvement Fund, in which developers set aside money for park improvements from each tract they develop in the township. That money then is used to match funds raised by the community. Since the program's inception, a total of $250,000 has gone to park improvement projects.
"He was the one who really encouraged local citizen groups to get involved. Now, throughout the township, there is civic pride in our neighborhood parks," said township recreation director Tim Denny.
"He deserves the credit for that because he was so supportive of recreation and also of civic groups," Denny said.
Mr. Straub was appointed to the park and recreation board in 1968. He was its chairman for about 10 years until 1987 and then again for the last four years.
He was a lifelong resident of Havertown and a 1954 graduate of Haverford Senior High School.
After high school, he joined the family business, New Model Cleaning on Darby Road, Haverford, started by his father in 1924. He took over the business when his father died in 1980.
He also was a past president of the Oakmont Fire Company and was a member of the Delaware County Fire Association. He was a past president of the Havertown Little League Baseball and the Oakmont Parent Teacher Organization.
His wife of 30 years, Joy Dowdy Straub, died in 1989.
He is survived by sons Christopher B., R. Scott, Thomas J., Robert J. and John D.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Nevil Memorial Church of St. George, Ardmore and Darby Roads, Ardmore. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 1 Plymouth Meeting Mall, Suite 520, Plymouth Meeting, Pa. 19462.
Arrangements were made by Stretch Funeral Service Inc. in Havertown.
