  • He was the son of Tyrone S. Wehry and Barbara A. Masser.1
  • Tyrone S. Wehry Jr. died at age 23, on 22 March 1998, in a cabin fire near Madisonburg, Centre County, PA.
    One newspaper report stated:
    Fire kills at least 11
    Police still looking into cause
    From CDT staff reports
MILES TOWNSHIP— In the worst disaster in Centre County history at least 11 people died in a cabin fire Sunday morning about two miles north of Madisonburg.
Most of the victims were high school and college students from Northumberland County.
“I’ve never heard of a worse disaster in Centre County" said Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers who said last Sunday that there were at least 11 dead "at this time.”
"There’s a hole in everyone’s heart" said cabin coowner John E Wehry of Herndon who lost two nieces and a nephew in die blaze "I guess the good Lord wants die good kids first."
Radio station KYW-AM in Philadelphia reported that a gas furnace exploded at die cabin, but Rockview state police said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Police would not release any other information.
Wehry said that police originally believed there was an explosion. but they rescinded that. If there had been an explosion, Wehry said pieces would have been scattered far away, and the officers did not see that.
Wehry said the cabin had a propane gas fireplace. but the tank was far away from the house. “It definitely was safe,” he said.
Wehry also said die cabin had many windows and doors. He said he didn't understand why the victims didn’t get out.
"Were they asphyxiated? Were they overcome by smoke?” Wehry asked. "Were the kids maybe smoking, and one fell asleep?"
Sayers said forensic pathologists, including a dental examiner, have been called in to help identify the bodies
"They’re burnt beyond recognition," Wehry said. "They’re going to need dental records.”
Wehry was able to name six of the victims: Amanda Wehry, 18, a senior at Line Mountain High School in Herndon; Toni Wehry, a senior at Millersville University; Tyrone Wehry Jr, 23; Toby Wiest, 22; David Wiest, 21; and Chad Haines, 21, a carpenter and construction worker.
The Weists are believed to be sons of Northumberland County Judge William Wiest, sources told the Sunbury Daily Item.
Centre Community Hospital officials said the exarmners had requested the victims' dental records.
When asked if foul play was suspected, Sayers said, "No comment I. I do not want to make any statement until I talk to police tomorrow.”
    . . . . .
Sayers said he saw nothing unusual when he arrived at the cabin, but said he was focusing on the bodies, not the fire.
Police said the cabin on Madisonburg Mountain off state Route 445 was engulfed in flames when they arrived at 5:20 a.m. Sunday.
"The building was completely gone,” said Milesburg fire police Captain John Henninger.
Investigators were at the house until dusk and planned to return at sunrise today.
The two-story oak and pine cabin sat on a secluded, heavily wooded site about 100 yards off the winding two-lane road that crosses Nittany Mountain from the village of Nittany to the village of Madisonburg.
Its crumpled metal roof sat askew on what remained of the cabin’s frame and foundation. A coupleof propane gas tanks and a nearby picnic pavilion appeared to be unscathed by the fire.
The students, who were on spring break, arrived at the cabin Friday night and were planning to go home Sunday, Wehry said.
“They were all friends, that bunch” said Wehry. "They went to the camp quite often.”
Wehry said the group liked to fish, hike and play cuds when they spent time at die cabin.
They loved to cook. They always were trying to make their favorite recipes and brag about it.
“When there’s 11 young people that have to go, it’s really rough.”
    . . . .
Wehry said the cabin had been in his family for almost 50 years. Last fall the cabin was enlarged and remodeled.
“We put siding new windows,” Wehry said. “We had it nice. It wasn’t elaborate It was two rooms. Upstairs for sleeping, downstairs was a kitchen and dining room. It could have slept maybe 40, 45. We spent Thanksgiving there.”
