Sarah A. Reed1

F, #46223, b. December 1846, d. 21 November 1906
  • Last Edited: 14 Feb 2020
  • Sarah A. Reed was born in December 1846, Schuylkill County, PA.3
  • She was the daughter of Abraham Reed and Sarah Harner.2
  • Sarah A. Reed married Jacob E. Klinger, son of Johann Philip Klinger and Catharine Yeager.1
  • Sarah A. Reed died on 21 November 1906, Coal Township, Northumberland County, PA, at age 59. Her death certificate indicates that the cause of death was "injuries to head and face -- strangulation by choking -- homicide." One newspaper account reported:
AGED WOMAN MURDERED FOR HER PENSION
Terrible Crime Committed in Shamokin Last Night--Suspect Lodged in Jail
Lying in a pool of her own blood, with her head crushed by a blow dealt evidently by some powerful person, Mrs. Sarah Klinger, an aged Shamokin woman, was found dead in her home late last evening, and another foul murder has been added to the already long list on the record of this blood stained and blood cursed county.
The murder was discovered by Harry Fisher, who called in neighbors and notified them of the crime. At present Fisher is lodged in jail, charged with the crime, and the chain of circumstancial evidence against him is particularly strong.
Mrs. Klinger was a yesterday received pensioner, and ner pension, amounting to $26.00. It is this money that is supposed to have invited the dreadful crime of murder.
Fisher was recently thrown out of a house for failure to pay his rent. He and his wife were taken by Mr Klinger, a kind-hearted old soul.
According to Fisher's story, he and his wife left the Klinger house about ten o'clock yesterday morning, and did not return until about 5:00 in (he evening, when he discovered the dead and horribly mutilated body lying at the bottom of the stairs, the skull crushed in as though it had been an egg shell.
Some persons doubt the murder theory, and claim that death as accidental. But the post-mortem examination held this afternoon by Coroner Dreher showed every indication of crime. The inquest is now, in progress.
Fisher, who is in jail, tells several conflicting stories, and the Coroner has advised that he be held until a complete examination has been held.

In 1910, after 3 separate trials, Henry Fisher was eventually convicted of second degree murder in the death of Sarah, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Fisher contended that he did not commit the murder and in one of his trial feigned insanity. At another point Fisher said that Fisher's wife had struck Sarah with a stove poker and as a result she fell down. The death certificate, however, notes that death was caused by strangulation. The first conviction for first degree murder was reversed by the PA Supreme Court in Commonwealth v. Fisher. 221 Pa. 538, 70 A. 865 (1908). After a second conviction, another retrial was ordered. After the verdict of guilty of second degree murder in the third trial was reached, Fisher confessed that he and his wife had killed Sarah Klinger to obtain her money.

By 1926, FIsher had been paroled and was working as a shoemaker in Bryn Mawr, PA, according to a report in the Shamokin News Dispatch (Shamokin, PA), 04 Feb 1926, Thu, Page 6.3,4,5,6
  • She was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA.3
