    He was born in Ross Township, Luzerne County, a son of the late H.L. and Amy E. (Newitt) Callender. On March 23, 1947, he married the former Shirley G. Fertig who survives. She was the love of his life and they enjoyed traveling by air and by cruise to many countries.
    Joe was a graduate of the Northumberland High School.
    Joe was a co-incorporator of Northway Industries, Inc., Middleburg in 1966, and served as Executive Vice-President and Secretary of the Board working for Battram Company, Inc. Joe also served as a manufacturers' representative for Wood-Mode, Kreamer for over 20 years.
    He was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church, Selinsgrove, where he served on the Congregational Council and other various committees. He also served on the Snyder County Industrial Development Authority.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen J. Callender of Nixa, Mo., and Janice A. and Glen Rohrer of Selinsgrove; one son, Craig A. Callender of Selinsgrove; two grandchildren, Amy C. Buck and husband Wesley of Port Trevorton and Carrie L. Frymoyer of Selinsgrove; four great-grandchildren, Glen, Garrett, Megan and Isaac Buck; and two sisters, Shirley G. Wolf of Northumberland and Ruth Wylie of Honeybrook.
    He was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Lynda Kay Callender, and three brothers, Warren, Steve, and George Callender.2

    Jack L. Benner, 73, Firestone executive
    Jack L. Benner, a retired Firestone executive, died of respiratory failure Tuesday at Howard County General Hospital. He was 73, and a resident of the Valley Mede section of Ellicott City.
    Born in Northumberland, Pa., he earned a bachelor's degree in business at Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia before serving in the Army during the Korean War.
    He initially moved to Baltimore in the early 1960s and was transferred several times before moving to Howard County in 1986.
    Mr. Benner joined Firestone as a salesman, and rose to become president of its Automotive Supply Co. subsidiary and general manager of the parent company's East Coast operations before retiring in 1989.
    Mr. Benner played golf at Turf Valley Country Club, and accomplished a hole-in-one. He also followed Penn State football.
    Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Witzke Funeral Home of Ellicott City, 4112 Old Columbia Pike.
    Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Vera Fertig; three daughters, Cynthia Chandler of Phoenix, Baltimore County, Linda Smith of Richfield, Ohio, and Myra L. Wieman of Ellicott City; a brother, James Benner of Sunbury, Pa; a sister, Joanne Riess of Wallingford, Pa; and seven grandchildren.
