- BARBARA CAROLYN WIEST, younger daughter of WILLIAM IRVINE and GRACE IONE (SCHLEIF) WIEST, was born on December 1, 1937, in Shamokin, PA.
Graduated from Shamokin High School in 1955 and from Syracuse University, where she majored in journalism, in 1959.
After she graduated from college, Barbara worked for a time in New York City, where she met JOHN THOMAS McCARTHY, Jr., a native of Long Island, NY, where he was in training for the US Diplomatic Corps. John and Barbara were married on July 4, 1962.
John McCarthy has served in US Embassies throughout the world. Barbara accompanied him to posts in Africa and Thailand, before her health caused them to take a posting in Washington, DC . Barbara had contracted a rare and incurable form of leukemia. She died from the side effects from the experimental treatment she volunteered for at Walter Reed Hospital, on October 8, 1971.
Comments: Life was not "fair" to Barbara Wiest. When she told her parents that she intende d to marry John McCarthy, her father banished her from his home. Irvine Wiest was a "lord-high-mucky-muck" in the Masons and took her marriage to a Roman Catholic as a personal affront. Whenever John and Barbara visited Shamokin, she stayed at the home of her Uncle Joe and Aunt Sara Hall. She never set foot in the house she grew up in until after her father's death when her mother attempted a reconciliation.
