    POTTSVILLE. Pa., Feb. 25. -- William F. Knecht, 83, president of Tower City National Bank and former publisher of the weekly Tower City Herald, died last night at his home, 137 Wisconsin ave., Tower City, after a year's illness.
    A native of Pottsville and a son of the late Charles and Pauline Eisensteck Knecht, he founded the Herald in 1898, and published it until 1922 when taken over by his son, William K., the present owner. He was married 61 years ago to Alice Klinger, who survives him with these children: Roy, of Heavener Okla; William K., of Tower City Mrs. Albert Erb, of Pottstown; Merle of Ardmore, teacher in Lower Merion Schools; Mrs. Philip Bortz, of Hershey, and Carl, of Huntingdon; a brother, Harry, of West Collingswood, N. J., and a sister, Mrs. John Leonard, of Tower City.
    The funeral will be held on Mon day noon with Rev. Israel Yost, St Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Tower City.

    Knecht, who was postmaster for 20 years and also served two terms as a county commissioner, died Thursday at the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee after a short illness. He was World War I veteran.
    Survivors include his wife, Josie; two sons; two daughters, including Mrs. Mary Alice Harl of Calvin; two brothers, three sisters and 10 grandchildren.

    Funeral services for William K. Knecht, 78. E. Grand Ave., Tower City. "West Schuylkill Herald" and "Schuylkill Haven Call" editor, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Dreisigacker Funeral Home with the Rev. Nevin Gearhart, pastor of English Lutheran Church, Pottsville, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Tower City.
    Mr. Knecht died yesterday morning at Pottsville Hospital where he was a patient since Aug. 9.
    He was a member and president of Tower City School Board from 1925 until Tower City and Porter Township district combined in 1956. He was then elected president of the Porter Tower Joint School Board. He served 12 years as a member of the Schuylkill County School Board, was its president and also president of the Schuylkill County School Directors Assn.
    Knecht was a charter member and past president of the Tower City - Porter Rotary Club, Poteau Lodge No. 62, Free and Accented Masons, Poteau, Okla; the Reading Consistory, Knights of Pythias and was a director of the Warne Hospital.
    He served two four-year terms as a member of the House of Representatives from the 2d district serving on the education committee during the period of school consolidation and was a member of the Boroughs, Mines and Minerals committees. His public activities were curtailed by a heart attack in 1959 and he did not seek reelection in 1961. He retired from the School Board in 1961 also.
    He retired as president of the Tower City National Bank in January of this year, having served as director from 1934 and president since 1960.
    He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Evangelical Church, served as Sunday School superintendent for 22 years; was on the church council for 28 years, and taught the Adult Sunday School class.
    Knecht was president, fire chief and trustee of the Volunteer Fire Company, Tower City.
    He was born in Tower City, May 3, 1892, the son of the late William F. and Alice Klinger Knecht. He graduated from the Tower City schools and in 1912 from Kutztown State Normal School. He was a teacher and principal in the Calhoun and Monroe schools, LeFlore County, Okla., from 1912 to 1922.
    He married the former Agnes C. Norbeth, of Calhoun, Jan. 8, 1915, and in 1922 they came to Tower City when he purchased the "West Schuylkill Herald" from his father. He and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1965.
    In 1940 Knecht in partnership with his son, Fred V. Knecht, purchased the "Schuylkill Haven Call" and later, the "Orwigsburg News", combining the "West Schuylkill Press" with the partnership. Two years ago he sold his interest in the paper to his son but continued as editor.
    Surviving are his widow, his son, two daughters, Janet, wife of James C, May, Hudson, Ohio; and Betty, wife of Nils Hansson, Gothenburg, Sweden; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, Carl, Tyrone: three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Erb, Pottstown; Louise, wife of Philip Borke, Hershey; Merle Knecht, Tower City.

    Graveside services for Merle A. Knecht, 94, formerly of Tower City, a school teacher for 34 years, who died Saturday at Orwigsburg Center, where she lived four years, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, Tower City. The Rev. Daniel Cammarn will officiate. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, is in charge of arrangements.
    Born in Tower City, she was a daughter of the late William F. and Alice Klinger Knecht.
    During World War I, when two "of her brothers were called to serve in the Army, she dropped out of school to help her father as a linotype operator in printing the weekly West Schuylkill Herald newspaper, Tower City. Two years later, she returned to Tower City High School to graduate in 1922.
    She attended Keystone State Normal School now Kutztown University, and graduated with a teaching degree in 1924.
    She began her 34-year teaching career in the first grade in Morrisville. Two years later, she was an elementary teacher in West Collingswood, N.J., for four years and then joined the faculty at Lower Merion Township School District, suburban Philadelphia area.
    She spent five summers taking courses at Penn State University and Columbia University, New York City, to earn her bachelor's degree and be certified to teach Spanish. She took sabattical leave in 1944-45 to do graduate work in psychology and Spanish at Ohio State University, Columbus.
    She resumed teaching in the elementary grades until 1954 when she was. named Spanish teacher in the Lower Merion Junior High School. She retired in 1958 and returned to Tower City, where she took elderly neighbors and friends for medical appointments and to senior citizens meals until she was 86.
    She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tower City.
    She was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy L., William K., Karl E. and Gilbert F. Knecht; two sisters, Mildred Erb and Louise Borke. She was the last member of her immedi-ate family.
    Surviving are 12 nieces and nephews.

    She first taught school in Pine Grove area and then returned to Tower City to teach in the elementary grades. She taught for 25 years in the special school for children in the Hershey school system.
    She was a member of Older Adult Senior Citizens Club of Hershey, local and national chapters cf AARP, Senior Citizens Club of Hershey and Dauphin County Retired Public School Employees Association.
    Her husband, Philip S., died in 1989.
    Surviving are two sisters, Mildred Erb, Pottstown, and Merle Knecht Tower City; 13 nieces and nephews.
    Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hershey.

    Karl E. Knecht, 62, a native of Tower City, suffered a fatal heart attack at his home, 1019 Cameron Ave., Tyrone, on Saturday morning.
    He was born May 2, 1911 and was the youngest of the children of the founder of the "West Schuylkill Herald", the late William F. Knecht and his wife, the former Alice Klinger.
    Mr. Knecht was a member of the 1928 graduating class of Tower City High School. After school hours and for a year following graduation, he worked for the "Herald". He entered Penn State University where he earned his degree in journalism.
    He was employed as a reporter for the "Mount Union Times" and "Huntingdon Daily News". In 1954, he moved to Tyrone, where he established the Knecht Printing and Stationery Company, a business he operated until his death.
    His wife, the former Sara Mattern of Mapleton, died in 1967.
    Surviving are four children, Karl M., of Greenbelt, Md; Martha, of Philadelphia; Mrs. Katherine Folckemer, of Ebensburg; John C, a student at Penn State University; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Erb, Pottstown; Mrs. Louise Borke, of Hershey and Merle A. Knecht of Tower City, nephew, Fred Knecht of Schuylkill Haven.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Johnson Funeral Home at Tyrone. Rev. Kane, pastor of First English Lutheran Church, officiated. Interment was in Bellewood Memorial Gardens at Bellewood.

    Fred V. Knecht, of Orwigsburg, formerly of Schuylkill Haven, publisher of The Call and The Press & Herald newspapers of southern Schuylkill County, passed away on July 9 at the age of 94.
    A Celebration of Life & Remembrance service was held at 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., 25 E. Main St., Schuylkill Haven, with the Rev. Harold Hand officiating. A visitation for family and friends was held at the funeral home Saturday. Friends and acquaintances were invited to a buffet meal and time of sharing at Fred's former home at 202 S. Warren St., Orwigsburg, immediately following the service. Personal remembrances are invited at either location.

    Prominent area banker J. Frank Mattern died unexpectedly at his home in Mapleton at 5:30 this Thursday morning. August 19, 1976. He was 83.At the time of his death, he was chairman of the board of the First National Bank of Mapleton. After beginning his banking career in 1912 at Beaver Springs, Mr. Mattern became the first cashier of the new Mapleton banking establishment in 1918. A native of Troxlerville, Snyder County, he was born September 2,1892 to James M. and Ella (Spangler) Mattern. On June 27, 1915, he married the former Lizzie Fiss. Surviving are his widow and two sons, Robert, Wyomissing. A daughter, Mrs. Sara Knecht, and a son, James preceded in death. There are nine grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and sister, J Richard, Drums and Mrs. William (Bulah) Knop, Baltimore, Md.
    He belonged to the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Mount Union, and served on the Church Council for many years.
    He was a member and treasurer of the following organizations: F&AM Chapter No. 688, Mount Union; Standing Stone Royal Arch, Huntingdon and P.O.S. of A., Mapleton. He also belonged to the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, and the Knights Templar, Huntingdon, and was a charter member of the Mapleton Fire Company. Active in civic affairs, he served on both the Mapleton Municipal Authority and the newly-formed Huntingdon County Area Vocational Technical School Building Authority. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 21, from the St. Luke Lutheran Church, Mount Union. The Rev. Russell Norris will officiate. Burial will be in the Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D. Friends will be received at the Heath funeral home in Mount Union from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, and at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time for service. Masonic memorial rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.Friday at the funeral home.It is requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions should be sent to the church of the donor's choice.

    Lizzie M. Mattern, 89, of Mapleton Depot, died at 11:02 p.m. Saturday, Feb! 14, 1981, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 28, 1891 in Troxelville, Snyder County, a daughter of Charles and Sarah (Middlewarth) Fiss. She was united in marriage with J. Franklin Mattern on June 27, 1915. Mr. Mattern preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 1976. Surviving are two sons, Robert F. Mattern of Hollidaysburg, and Donald E. Mattern of Wyomissing; nine grandchildren and three-great grandchildren. A daughter, Sara Knecht, and a son, James Mattern, preceded their mother in death. Mrs. Mattern was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. Mount Union, and belonged to Mount Union Chapter No. 280. Order of the Eastern Star, where she was past worthy matron.
    The funeral service will take place Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m. from St. Luke Lutheran Church, Mount Union, with the Rev. Clinton Chu officiating. Interment will be made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg R.D. Eastern Star memorial services will be held at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Robert D. Heath Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the benevolent fund of the St.Luke's Lutheran Church in Mount Union.
