Edward Klinger

  • Edward Klinger is also referred to as Henry Edward Morton in some sources.
  • He was born circa 1832.1
  • He was the son of Johann Peter Klinger and Catharine Wiest.
  • Edward Klinger married Anna Otto, daughter of Jonathan Otto and Susannah Bressler, on 24 August 1851.2,3
  • Edward Klinger and Anna Otto were divorced on 9 September 1858 Schuylkill County, PA, on grounds of desertion by Edward, beginning 16 Aug 1855.3
  • Edward served in the US Army, Company L, 3rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Calvary, during the Civil War but then deserted. Service records list an Edward Klinger, sometimes listed with the middle initial "W" and sometimes with the middle initial "E," as enlisting for service on August 22, 1861. Apparently, Edward Klinger deserted on February 22, 1863. Other evidence confirms that this was likely Edward. Testimony of Valentine Savage in connection with the Estate of Peter Klinger indicates that Edward "went West" in the mid 1850's, but occasionally visited his family in Pennsylvania. According to this testimony, Edward used the surname "Moreton" [Morton] because he had deserted from the army.
  • Edward not only moved around but also often went by other names, such as Edward Morton, Henry Morton, H.E. Morton, or Harry Morton. The testimony of his brother Israel in connection with their Father's Estate proceedings confirms the basic facts that he was married at least twice, the second time in St. Louis, MO, had 2 children, one by each spouse. Edward (under the name Henry Edward Morton) filed a petition for divorce from his second wife, Alice, in St. Louis County, Missouri in February, 1877. According to the divorce petition, they lived together until December 10, 1875, after which they lived separately. The divorce from Alice was granted in April, 1877.
  • Edward Klinger died on 11 July 1878, St. Louis, MO.4
  • He was buried at Potter's Field, St. Louis, MO.4

  • She was the daughter of Edward Klinger and Alice Dear.
  • At the time of the 1880 Census, Ida was living in the household of Thomas C. and Minna Martin, in St. Louis, MO. Ida's name was listed as "Martin."3
  • In 1882, Thomas C. Martin was appointed by the Probate Court for the City of St. Louis as Curator (or guardian) of the estate Ida Klinger who was then 7 years and 11 months old. An affidavit by Clara J. Miller, the mother of Edward's third wife, Elizabeth, indicates that after Edward's divorce from Alice, Edward and Elizabeth took care of Ida, but Edward's death left Elizabeth in "destitute circumstances," whereupon Ida was given over to the care of Thomas Martin. The affidavit also states that Elizabeth had remarried and was then living in Leadville, CO.
  • After Thomas Martin's wife died in the 1880's, Ida apparently was sent to live with a sister of Thomas Martin and then later to an aunt's home in Des Moines, IA. Sometime later, according to family history as related by Margaret Downing, Ida's mother Alice took Ida to Canada, where Ida was enrolled at the Convent of Sacred Heart, in Calgary, Alberta.4

  • At the time of the 1920 Census (taken as of January 1, 1920), Ida and Fred were living in Grand Forks, ND. Fred was working in a candy factory. They had 3 children: Fred, Olive and Edward. The Census notes that Ida's father was born in PA, while her mother was born in MO. Their son Fred was working for a railroad; Olive was a waitress in a cafe, and Edward was also working on a railroad.8
