    Melvin L. Kimmel, 73, a former Ashland resident, passed away Tuesday evening at Pottsville Hospital.
    Born in Hegins Township, June 8, 1934, he was a son of the late Rufus and Laura Savage Kimmel.
    He attended Hegins Township High School.
    He served with the Army as a truck mechanic following the Korean conflict.
    He was employed as a coal miner for Hegins Mining Company and retired from the Porter Tunnel Coal Company, Tower City.
    He was of the Lutheran faith.
    He was preceded in death by brothers, Daniel, Monroe and Wilmer; a sister, Mary Kimmel.
    Surviving are brothers, John Kimmel, Lavelle, Palmer Kimmel, Ashland, and Guy Heim, Pitman; sisters, Carol Daily and Marie Banach, both of Philadelphia; nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Lutheran Church, Airport Road, Ashland. The Rev. Robert F. Hoenich, pastor, will officiate. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of services. There will be no evening viewing. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Barry Township. Richard W.     Funeral services will be held Tuesday for 20-year-old Monroe Kimmel, 65 Nater street, Ashland, who was fatally injured when caught in a fall of coal yesterday at an independent mine near Centralia.
    He was pronounced dead on arrival at Ashland Hospital at 12:40 p.m., death having been attributed to a ne[c]k fracture. The body was released by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Koschoff, Centralia.
    The victim was born in Hegins Township, a son of Rufus and Laura (Savidge) Kimmel.
    Surviving in addition to his parents are these brothers and sisters: Wilmer and John Lavelle; Guy, Melvin and Chester, Ashland; Daniel, at home; Palmer, Valley View; Carol Balzano and M. Michael Banach, Philadelphia.
    The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Miller Funeral Home, Valley View, with Rev. George Spieker, pastor, of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gordon, officiating. He attended Hegins Township High School, and was employed as a lifelong coal miner, retiring from the Hegins Mining Company in 1980. Following his mining employment, he worked at Kennedy Van Saun, Danville, for eight years as an assembler. John was a member of Christ’s United Lutheran Church, Airport Road, Ashland.     Raymond was married to Joan (Kocher) Straub for 67 years.
    He was a 1953 graduate of Hubley Township High School.
    He had a lifetime career as a truck driver, driving his own truck for many years, and after working with several companies finished his career from ABF Freight after 20 years of service.
    He was a member of Peace UCC, Berrysburg, and had served on the church consistory, a member of Susquehanna Lodge No. 364 F&AM, Millersburg, he was a past Grand Tall Cedar of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Millersburg Forest, a member of the Harrisburg Consistory AASR, he was a past president of many years of the Berrysburg Fire Company. He and his wife were members of the Good Sams Camping Club and enjoyed their time camping and traveling. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and two great grandsons.
    In addition to his wife Joan he is survived by daughter LuAnn Laudenslager and her husband David of Shickshinny, daughter Giselle Miller and her husband Tom of Elizabethville, son Jerry Straub and his wife Elaine of Berrysburg, granddaughters Danica Hoppes and her husband Dustin of Dauphin, Kara Straub of Berrysburg, Taylor Fasnacht of Millersburg, great grandsons Chayton & Lakota Hoppes. He is also survived by a sister Bonnie Hassinger of Harrisburg.
    He was preceded in death by a brother Marlin "Junior" Straub.
    The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 23rd, 2021 at Peace United Church of Christ from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM. A private burial will take place at Sweitzer's Cemetery, Berrysburg. There will be a Masonic Service at 10:45 am at the church.
    The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Berrysburg Fire Company, 196 W Market St, Berrysburg, PA 17005.
